View Full Version : Artist focus, nominations

Led Zeppelin
20th June 2008, 16:46
So I had a good idea for the Music forums: Artist focus.

The concept is pretty simple; members nominate artists that they want the focus to be on, and the artist with the most nominations gets a sticky thread in the Music forum for two weeks, in which a bio is posted along with videos, photos, lyrics etc.

Now, of course the goal is to give attention to the lesser known artists, so please keep that in mind when making nominations. It would be a bit redundant to nominate bands like Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd because well....they're already pretty well known.

So yeah, nominate some artists.

Neurosis

A bit wrong to base this on nominations (or polls) when the idea is to spread unknown artists? Or maybe not. Anyways, I can make a bio of sorts if this band is picked.

A bit wrong to base this on nominations (or polls) when the idea is to spread unknown artists?

Not as long as all the artists who are nominated are relatively unknown, I'll make sure to weed out the more "known" ones.

Also, there's no other way of doing this besides me personally picking the artist, and I don't want to do that because it's not fair.

After they're latest album Mono has become one of my favorite bands. I think they were in town a while ago, I really should have gone to see them live. Really? I never heard or seen them on my tv or radio.

mykittyhasaboner
7th April 2009, 21:19
I've heard them on the radio quite a few times, a local student-run radio station.

A lot of people came to see them live as well, but it was at a festival so that's expected.

We only have top 40, Dutch music-only, classic rock, classical, commercialised indie & dancemusic and urban stations.

mykittyhasaboner
7th April 2009, 23:11
That's about all we have too, as far as major radio stations go. that's why I say fuck all that shit and listen to 88.5 WKPX.

They are pretty cool, the station is made up of students from a college called Nova. They will play whatever you want as long as they can get the song, or another song by the artist. Ive actually requested Crimewave before. They break up their schedules into different genres. One morning, they will play punk/ska/reggae (like this morning :)), then in the afternoon will play some more indie/hardcore/pop-ish stuff which gets annoying. At night they move towards electronic/dance stuff. They take requests during various times.

Although the sound quality fades depending on where you are driving, since its not a fancy corporate radio station with a million dollar+ tower.

I'm not entirely sure what the precedent is, some of the previous ones (gogol for instance or the king blues) are moderately known...

Now I'm running the show it doesn't matter terrifically, although artists that everyone is aware of - immortal tech for instance, if this forum wasn't so niche he'd probably be more appropriate, but knowing this audience I'd say most are familiar - probably covers DP as well... That being said Blue Scholars would be pretty prime for here, maybe The Coup (like you said) as well.

Sam_b

I think the whole remit of Artist focus should be concentrating on discovering bands that the nominee thinks would be enjoyed by other members of the board. Otherwise I assume we'd be getting the usual suspects such as Rage, ImTech et all in.

Thats how I regard it, but it really is the choice of who you want to nominate.
I would say though that people should try and limit their nominations to one artist per 'round' of nominations and voting, just so matters are not confused.

I nominate McCarthy (again). Though it would appear that they are a little too obscure to gather other nominations.

So, I'll fill in some back ground for y'all. McCarthy were around in the late 80s, and they made a minor impact on the indie circuit; after they had broken up two members of the band went on to form the better known band Stereolab. I nominate them because they not only were a band who made great sounding music, but managed to include really great socialist lyrics as well as attacking capitalism and the mindset of capitalists.
