Daniel Lyons, 12.09.02 from Forbes Magazine (http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2002/1209/059.html?_requestid=2372)
Michael Moore's Oscar-contender documentary, Bowling for Columbine, pokes fun at corporate creeps and hypocrites in his crusade to figure out who is to blame for the gun-related violence in America. But we've found Moore's facts a little slippery.
TITLE: Moore titled the movie Bowling for Columbine because, he suggests, the two kids who shot up Columbine High in Littleton, Colo., went to a 6 a.m. bowling class on the day of the attack.
ACTUALLY: Cool story, but police say it's not true. They say the shooters skipped their bowling class that day.
MISSILES: Moore wonders whether kids at Columbine might be driven to violence because of the "weapons of mass destruction" made in Lockheed Martin's assembly plant in Littleton. Moore shows giant rockets being assembled.
ACTUALLY: Lockheed Martin's plant in Littleton doesn't make weapons. It makes space launch vehicles for TV satellites.
WELFARE: Moore places blame for a shooting by a child in Michigan on the work-to-welfare program that prevented the boy's mother from spending time with him.
ACTUALLY: Moore doesn't mention that mom had sent the boy to live in a house where her brother and a friend kept drugs and guns.
BANK: Moore says North Country Bank & Trust in Traverse City, Mich., offered a deal where, "if you opened an account, the bank would give you a gun." He walks into a branch and walks out with a gun.
ACTUALLY: Moore didn't just walk in off the street and get a gun. The transaction was staged for cameras. You have to buy a long-term CD, then go to a gun shop to pick up the weapon after a background check.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Also, his "A Brief History of America" (http://www.bowlingforcolumbine.com/media/clips/index.php) while obviously meant to be comical, is still rather insulting.

Actually, he says quite explicitly in the movie that she sent him to a house where guns were, because that's where the kid got the gun. Im fairly certain it mentions drugs as well, and the point was, she had no options, due to the heinous constraints of the welfare to work program.
As far as not getting the gun at the bank, the bank teller says rather explicitly that they have a vault of guns, and that they're a license gun seller. Does Mr. Lyons accuse MM of fabricating that? I've never heard that charge ANYWHERE else.

the title refers to MM saying that bowling could have caused the shootings just as people blame Marilyn Manson. he doenst believe bowling caused the shotings. i believe it resulted from years of bullying.

SERIOUSLY: He's making fun of the accusations of who was responsible for the tragic shooting. If you blame the music they listen too, you might just as well blame bowling. If they really were bowling is beyond the point.
REALLY: The missiles are being used for weapons as well, however I'm not saying that's what they really make them for.
BUT: If his mother paid more attention she wouldn't have done that.
NOPE: The bank had, in fact, it's own gun vault where the weapons were kept.

The Iraqis, on the other hand, are just plain evil.

I think that parts of Stupid White Men are slightly dubious but I also think that the book is very important because it gives us information and views that are nearly impossibly to find elsewhere.
It is good to have a proper account of the Election debacle and it was also to find out about the USSR/US arms race.
Capitalists, can you prove what you are saying? Convince me.

Am i the only leftist that doesn't like the guy?
I saw him on Q.time once... and i thought he was very childish. Sure he has lots of useful statistics, but the manner he puts them across...
The bits of stupidwhiteman that i've read, 'don't impress me much'

James, I see that Michael Moore makes the left look silly and childish. Stupid White Men does nothing for the left if given to a right-winger to read, and I can see through his writing style easily, I'd rather see the facts in a reliable context as opposed to this jumble of biased, colloquial coversation, for lack of a better word.
However he does have some legitimate points and it is nice to see all these topics together, even if they are slightly distorted. All I can say to this is "lies, damn lies and statistics".

I'm with you James...the guy is way overrated. He's kind of a Rush Limbaugh for the Left...only funny.
In Stupid White Men he really spins things in the same way a propagandist would but still it's nice to see that spin because you sure as hell won't see it in the media (just read the parts about Bush's Cabinet and the election results...a real eye-opener).

i agree Michael Moores tatics are childish at times but what is funnier than going into tobacco corporate offices and having a choir of people who lost their voiceboxes from cancer from smoking singing christmas songs.
or confronting that Phelps guy and his group "God Hates Fags" with the "Sodomobile" and 20 gay men and women.
