Should one identify themselves directly with a label (i.e. Anarchist or Communist) or allude to it in conversation?
Useing the label directly may help dispel misconception and steriotypes associated with it. But avoiding it may keep the listener's mind open, leading to a better outcome in the long run.
What situations call for each option?

Dont shout "Im a commie" at neo-nazis.
That aside, depends on who are you talking too. If someone is just interested in what communism/anarchism/any-ism is (or how you see it), I dont see a problem in openly labeling yourself. On the other hand, if arguing with a stuborn-ass conservative, you might want to avoid it, since the stereotypes he/she has will automaticaly make your arguments lose all weight in his head (my experience, anyway).
I wouldn't discuss communism with an employer, the bank, a court jury, or any government agency as you may not get your desired outcome.:D
That goes without saying. Telling your boss that hes a capitalist pig is not the brightest idea.:)
