Propelled by Ideological Might
The Korean revolution has been traditionally supported by the power of ideology.
In the past decade the Korean people have successfully safeguarded their socialist system through grim ordeals of history and added lustre to it, the success which is attributed to Kim Jong Il’s outstanding ideological and theoretical activities and energetic Songun revolutionary leadership.
At every important turn of revolution he inspired the people to work miracles in the struggle against imperialism and the United States and also in the socialist construction by arousing the revolutionary enthusiasm of the armymen and the people through dynamic ideological motivation.
When the pernicious anti-socialist manoeuvres of the imperialists compelled some countries to abandon their red flags, the Korean-style socialism vigorously advanced along the road of victory. One of the keys is the constant adherence to the importance of ideology.
It is an unshakeable faith and will of Kim Jong Il to hold fast to the importance of ideology and accomplish the socialist cause to the end.
In the mid-1990s the Korean revolution was in a difficult situation and the imperialists’ ideological offensives were getting more heinous day by day. The prevailing situation strongly demanded that the line of ideological importance be more thoroughly maintained and the ideological work be given the first place above everything.
Penetrating deep into the importance of ideological work, Kim Jong Il made public in June Juche 84(1995) Giving Priority to Ideological Work Is Essential for Accomplishing Socialism.
Some time after the publication of his work, he said to some officials that a top priority should be given to developing the ideological work, thereby encouraging the people to remain faithful to revolution, full of confidence and optimism, however hard the situation might be.
Busy as he was with inspections of military units and economic sectors, Kim Jong Il wrote many works, including Live Not Merely for Today But for Tomorrow, On Emulating the Revolutionary Soldier Spirit, and The Songun-based Revolutionary Line Is a Great Revolutionary Line of Our Era and an Ever-victorious Banner of Our Revolution.
His works provided the Korean people with the ideological and spiritual source of the revolutionary conviction and propelled the Korean socialist cause to victory overcoming all harsh trials.
He made a firm conviction that strengthening the People’s Army is the only way to defend socialism and the people’s happiness. To this end he paid primary concern to consolidating the political and ideological might of the KPA.
One December day in Juche 83(1994) he told some KPA commanding officers to this effect: Confrontation with the enemy is a showdown of not only military strength but also ideology, and I insist on the importance of ideology in army building and military affairs. He then emphasized the need to further improve politico-ideological instruction of the soldiers.
Ever since he visited the Tabaksol post of the KPA in January Juche 84(1995), he made continuous inspections of military units on Chol Pass, Mts. Osong and Taedok in the frontline areas and all across the country. He saw to it that the KPA set it as the general task of military and political work to conduct the campaign to win the title of O Jung Hup-led Seventh Regiment. (The campaign is a mass movement of a higher level to make all the soldiers death-defyingly defend the leadership of the Korean revolution by following the example of the 7th Regiment of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army that safeguarded Kim Il Sung at the cost of their lives during the anti-Japanese armed struggle.) In the course of the campaign, the KPA has developed into an invincible force with no match and fully prepared in a politico-ideological way and also in a military and technical way. As a result the entire army has become a Songun revolutionary rank that shares the same idea, will, life and death with the revolutionary leadership, and the self-defence power of the country has been consolidated that no enemy dares to challenge.
Prevalent in the whole country is the trait of mutual support between the army and the people, leading to their unity in idea and fighting spirit and making the whole land an impregnable fortress.
Thanks to the strong self-defensive power built up in the most difficult situation, the Korean people have emerged victorious in the anti-imperialist military front, flying higher the red flag of socialism.
Kim Jong Il has successfully led the building of the socialist economy by dint of ideological power.
Korea had suffered untold hardships in the past ten-odd years: Socialist markets had disappeared, rendering Korea’s economic construction difficult; the US toughened up its economic sanctions and blockade attempts; and the consecutive natural disasters plunged the Koreans into critical food shortages, while many factories and enterprises in several economic sectors faced stoppages in production.
At that time, Kim Jong Il planned to hasten the building of a great, prosperous and powerful country on the strength of ideological and spiritual power, and encouraged the army and the people to a new forward march.
It is an aspect of his leading art that once he grasps the main link for victorious revolution and construction, he holds fast to it to provide a turning point of revolution.
During those days he made up his mind to create a paradigm for a powerful nation-building in Jagang Province first, whose condition was much inferior to those of any other provinces of the country. It had much less resources for industrial development and agricultural production, and as a mountainous region with traffic limitations, it found difficulty in promoting production relationship with other regions.
The paradigm made in the difficult and unfavourable conditions, however, would produce a greater influence, vitality and attracting power.
In September Juche 85(1996), when Korea was on its “Arduous March”, Kim Jong Il told a senior official of the provincial Workers’ Party of Korea committee that he put forward Jagang Province as a paradigm in building a great, prosperous and powerful country. He then confirmed his belief that they would create a model, and he illuminated concrete ways and methods they should take. In the biting January days in Juche 87(1998) he visited the province where miracles were being wrought.
He made the rounds of the province’s medium and small hydropower stations, factories and many other places, all of which were the result of lofty revolutionary spirit and endeavours made by the provincial people. Greatly satisfied with them, Kim Jong Il termed their indomitable revolutionary spirit the “Kanggye spirit” and made it prevail throughout the country.
Afterwards he visited the Songjin Steel Complex and the Ranam Coal Mining Machine Complex, where he inspired the revolutionary enthusiasm of the workers, thus kindling the torches of the great revolutionary upsurge in March 1998 and November 2001 respectively.
In the flames of the revolutionary upsurges, the first Korean artificial earth satellite, Kwangmyongsong 1, was successfully launched, followed by the large projects of land realignment and waterway constructions being completed. There mushroomed everywhere in the country hydropower stations of large and small sizes, factories and production centres modernly equipped, while the urban and rural areas improved in appearance and the scenic places of the country developed into fine popular resorts.
