Listen, guys. I'm planning to enter this contest so I can win a trip to the ROK (or, South Korea) with a local organization called Memphis in May (http://www.memphisinmay.org). I entered last year to go to Argentina, and I was selected as an interview candidate, but not to be an exchange student. :(
Anyway, I think my chances are better this year. I have to write an essay on the topic, "Fifty Years Since the Korean War (Conflict), but Why Should I Care Today?" This topic is much harder than last year's topic, since it would actually require some research. Do you guys have any ideas on what I can say about it? Maybe y'all can think of some good ideas that I wouldn't even think of. I'd really dig going to the ROK!
Thanks!
Peace & Love,
Your sis,
La Rain
PS: I also posted this in Chit-Chat, but I thought I'd post it here too so I can get some righties' ideas. :)

Everyone is gonna go to South Korea, right after I leave. Damn it!
Hm, tough essay question. I'm gonna think now.
I'll get back to you...but I don't know.

This is CI...
You should reflect on it as a testament to American benevolence and memorialize the just action that America undertook to defend freeedom and democracy, even in the face of extreme adversity.
It is a symbol of capitalist american sovereignty, and the defense thereof.

If I were you, I would take CI's advice. Whatever happens, good luck. I would help you, but I am a strong believer that you should submit your own ideas.
However, if you were to write an essay on North Korea, I would talk about Carter's role in developing an appeasement policy regarding nuclear weapons. The Clinton administration's adoption of Carter's ideas and the long-term implications this could have on Clinton's legacy, in light of new revelations by the North Korean regime would be the main focus of the paper. Explain why it was that the U.S. bank-rolled their nuclear program in an attempt to bribe them and how modern day democrats are proposing we extend this failed method to Iraq, and what the implications for countries like Japan and South Korea could be. Comparing and contrasting this approach to the one the liberals want to use in dealing with Iraq would be the second key point of the paper. The major thesis would no doubt be how inept liberal democrats have been in the foreign policy arena, and why the American public should do everything in their power to remove them from these critical decision making processes by voting them out of office.

Um, nobody here has really helped me so far, but thanks anyway. :)
It was nice what you said, Norman, and it would make sense (even though I don't necessarily agree per se), but the paper's only about why I should give a rip about the Korean War even though I wasn't even born then. Gracias very much anyway....
