How do they run paramedic stuff in New Zealand?

I have lived in the U.S. for a while now, and worked as an emergency medical technician for a few years (EMT-I Shock/trauma specialist.)
In the U.S. there are a few levels of EMTs, the highest of which is EMT-Paramedic.

However, I used to live in Belfast and in the U.K. there was no legal definition for an "ambulance technician", although paramedics were recognized and protected by law.

Which is NZ more like?
