People come by any political orientation by any of the means you suggested. Leftists are generally concerned about other people. If concern for others is irrational than I am incredibly irrational.

What is "ego-need?"

When you quote from research it is generally accepted that use a source list (ie--author, journal, issue #, publisher, date, etc...). Where did you get your info?

There was a time when discontent and rebellion were seen as "the work of the devil".

Now, it's "in our genes".

I have the same confidence in both explanations: ZERO!

It's interesting to note, though, how pseudo-science always makes a big splash in periods of reaction. I saw one of those "works" a few years ago; it argued that the oldest child is always conservative while younger children are rebellious. I have to admit I didn't approach it with an open mind; I am the oldest child and my younger siblings are very conservative. Whenever you are lucky enough to have direct evidence of the falsehood of these stupid "theories", it becomes even easier to reject them out of hand.
