Incidentally, his opponent's a right-wing weasel.

So does this prove the theory that Americans like leftists when they discuss leftist ideas as opposed to leftist words?

The word 'socialist' and 'socialism' in the United States, a lot of the time, have no correlation to Marxism. Its just a term for left wingers.

I'm not surprised to see that word, as it does not have the same connotation that we give it.

It always bites my ass when people talk about how Sweden or France are "socialist," and I have to explain them that they are wrong and don't know what the hell they are talking about.

In the case of "Scandinavian socialism" they're referring to a relatively heavily socialized mixed economic process. Not "socialist" in the same sense.

His "liberal" opponent is a war-mongering bigot.
