I have been calling myself a Trotskyist for a while, but honestly, I know very, very little about Trotsky. I looked at the list of the writings dealing with Trotskyism and was unsure where to start, could anyone give me a suggestion on the best place to find out about Trotskyism?

Try the Marxist Internet Archive:
http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/index.htm
I recommend his writings "Lessons from October" and the "Revolution Betrayed"

If you want a clear definition of what Trotsky believed in terms of organizational methods, his work the Transitional Program would be a good start, though some Trotskyist groups have abandoned it altogether.
Its quite short, and I think you will enjoy it.
Yes the transitional program is very good .
Also the revolution betrayed. I think the latter is even more important.
Also try reading " Lenin and Trotsky:What they really stood for" by Ted Grant

You might want to read:
The Permanent Revolution: http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/1931/tpr/index.htm
Fascism, what is it and how to fight it: http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/works/1944/1944-fas.htm
You might also want to join the Trotskyist subforum.

to be honest i really enjoyed reading Trotsky's selected works when i was first learning about him and about Trotskyism,
they are lots of little articles and letters (etc) and you can easily dip in and out of them and pull out lots of ideas from little reading,
then the T.P which is fairly essential, maybe read some Tony Cliff or Issac Deutcher as well

You should read State and Revolution and What is To Be Done? By Lenin first. That will give you the material basis to understand Trotsky
