It would probably involve removing your fingerprints, cancelling any ID such as drivers licence, resigning from any job, disconnecting your phone line, getting rid of your computer/Internet access etc.

It depends. If law enforcement is looking for you right now, it'll be much harder to simply disappear.

um... if you're thinking of traveling the world, it's best to be at least partially on the map (if only sporadically)

But won't you need a passport??
Cybersomatix
9th June 2008, 11:19
Precisely... and depending on where you're leaving from there are certain advantages to having a passport handy...
Visa-free entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._passport#Visa-free_entry_or_visa_on_arrival) throughout most of Europe (except Poland & Russia, which'll run you a little more), for instance.
I presume you're traveling overland? From Russia to Africa... I certainly hope you don't intend to travel overland across the Caucuses... that would be stupid... If anything, your best bet would be either to fly from Russia to Africa... Lower Nile Valley of Egypt or Ethiopia are your best best as the Upper Nile (southern Egypt) and Sudan aren't the best of places to be without a reason right now... Ethiopia to South Africa are as smooth sailing as Africa gets with a few exceptions in Somalia and Zimbabwe (ugh... thinking of faces of the migrant workers fleeing Mugabe's rule makes me sick... the man should be shot)... From SA to Iran is a bit ass backwards, but what the hell, it's not my trip... It's not my waste of $700 (You'll have to fly from South Africa to Dubai and then to Tehran as there are no direct flights from South Africa to Iran)... It's not my waste of Jet petrol... I presume you're flying out of Iran, too... unless you intend on crossing US occupied Afghanistan or through Pakistan's western tribal provinces... sounds like it'd be fun... I've got the skin tone that if I had a little bit of cash and grew out my facial hair, I could buy the right clothes hire my own militia and probably pull it off... but I don't recommend it... not unless your Pashtun & Urdu are fairly unaccented... a flight from Tehran to Lahore will run you another $400... be sure to have your yellow fever card and passport ready at the border between Lahore & Amristar too, or they won't let you into India... I don't even understand the logistics of the rest of your plan
Look... I've got a round the world trip that I'm planning to go on in a few years... it will span the course of 2 years and require proficiency in at least 5 languages... fuck it... I'll just ask... do you want any help?

Cybersomatix: I understand the point about Mugabe. But honestly, many African countries are cruel dictatorships. Zimbabwe is getting singled out now because it doesn't pander to western imperialism (as much). See this article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/apr/17/zimbabwe.tibet
Anyway, I really wouldn't know how you'd "disappear" totally. Surely someone will know that you've gotten a visa for a country and where you take a plane to. Of course you could "disappear" in a big foreign city where millions of people live. But what if you get into trouble and your visa's run out?
Seems more like you just want to make a trip around the world, which is cool. I wish I could afford that.
By the way, this vaguely reminded me of a newspaper article from a couple of months ago. It was about this Dutch kid who ran away from home by bicycle, because he wanted to go to China. He made it to Poland before someone finally realised what was going on and had him sent back. Crazy stuff.

Wow that's quite a list but just to pull you up for just a second.
India (New Delhi, Jaipur, Bombay, Madras, Pune, Bangalore) - You will most certainly be refused entry into India without a valid passport, visa and a list of your inoculations.
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (Pyongyang) - You won't be able to get into here without the things mentioned above and you will have someone from the North Korean government attached you at all times. So if you don't your give your name and details, you'll either be dead or expelled. If you're a US or South Korean citizen you won't get in at all. Maybe the same in Beijing, I'm not sure.

How are you going to afford all that? How do you plan on entering the places that Americans are banned from?
Anyway, dropping off the face of the earth is the last thing you want to do if you are going to go traveling. There are plenty of ways you could get into trouble traveling and you need to contact the embassy should that happen.

You would have to stop carrying a mobile phone for one if you have it registered in your name then you can be easily tracked, if you can receive texts you can be traced.

AWESOME thread!!!
If you are in real trouble:
http://www.legion-etrangere.com/
After 5 years - you have a new identity.
Normal Basic advice to make you less traceable:
• Never pay with credit card
• Always pay cash
• Don't let them take your fingerprints
(OK - if you had trouble with the law,
it's probably too late)
I have this prob right now since
for the new passport they need
my prints. They claim that the prints
are only saved on the chip on the
passport but the chances are that
they are in Fort Meade at the end
of the day...)
• Apply for name change and preferrably
chose the name of someone who died
exactly that date.
Anyway: It will throw the majority of the
bureaucracy's off - but useless against
real professionals.
• Learn how to mask your IP-Adress
• Learn the basics of private Data-
security (tools are cheap - and
its usually possible to delete 95% of
all traces)
Need help? Contact me.
• Never mention your profession
to people you do not know very well.
• Exchange sensitive information
on the net only encrypted.
(Files, e-mail etc.)
• Remember: CASH is king. Always!
• Close your current bank accounts and
open a new with a cash deposit.
• Don't own and use a cell-phone.
If you have to: Pay for the phone in
cash and use only pre-paid cards.
_____
• Get a high-quality forged
birth-cerificate.
• Don't own a car. Period.

Americans are banned from certain places? Which ones?
Some. Maybe not 'officially' 'banned' - but de facto.
Countries like North Korea, Guinea Bissau, Libya, Tchad etc.
You get the idea...

any more ideas
Yes - but not on this forum.
Please suggest a secure 'channnel'
of communication.
P.S.: Forget the idea travelling to many
obscure countries - you will leave an
enormous trail behind and in the end you
will have achieved the opposite.

Faroe Islands would be a good place to hide. North of Shetland, south of Iceland, freindly people that don't ask questions, nice and iscolated, beutiful scenery. Seriously, you should go there. I go with my family every year, and I never get tired of the place.:)

If you plan on going to Australia, fuck going to Sydney. Go to Perth. It's one of the cleanest cities on the world, it's got awesome beaches, great people, it's small, and lots of fun. I lived there (Perth) for awhile and it was awesome, traveled to Sydney twice and hated it - too dirty and too much like any other major city in the world. Also, Perth is the most isolated capital city in the world. I've also heard Adelaide and Melbourne are nice.
