Well I started watching this video, having read some of his written works I got intrigued. He did make some good judgement on behalf of separating good from bad regarding the former Soviet Union.
Unfortunately soon he started handing examples from former Yugoslavia. Here he made some crucial mistakes which can be credited to either lack of knowledge or bias.
Proclaiming Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic a left oriented politician is very ignorant. All the nationas from former Yugoslavia agree that he sympatized ultranationalist paramilitaries. Emphasize on the word ULTRA.
The mere conflict of Yugoslav people is so complex that it will take decades to analyse the reasons for a bloody slaughter.
But stating that Milosevic was wrongfully accused is just a bad way to start a debate.
I am aware that mister Parenti wanted to point out all the bad in USA politics, but when he talks about NATO interventions in Yugoslavia he needs to know the entire story (or at least the major part). Fact is that without foreign involvement barbaric slaughters would continue.
Again I'm not endorisng any conflicted party in the Yugoslav civil war, they all did the same and used the same means of destroying people, but if NATO and Europe just stood still these people would probably extinct themselves.
This is all in a nutshell of course. I would like to point out some of these theories (lets not go so far and call them - facts) to mister Michael Parenti, in a civilized letter of course. Does anyone know an e-mail where I could get in touch? Thanks a lot.
On the similar subject, I was asked to write an article on the current Lebanon crisis and although I have read tons on the subject I do not feel competent to pour my conclusions on to the public. Why? Well I would first need to go there myself for a few months and shape my thoughts. Get the inside info from all the conflicting sides and dig deeper then ever before.
This crucial step should be made whenever trying to impose your ideas of a foreign problem that you are not informed about. On the basis of fact that he wrote 20+ books (which ARE great), Michael Parenti unfortunately believes that hi has become an authority figure on the subject and that the lack of information can be filled with his personal assumptions and beliefs.
The irony in all of this is that he is the one that is trying to teach his students not to act that way.
Touché (feel free to debate)
