I recently discovered this band and they have some pretty awesome songs. The quote in my sig is from their song Four Winds which is awesome, I've linked to that below.

The lead singer is a great lyricist, he writes very poetic lyrics which remind me of some of Dylan's work, but even better in some way because it's more modern and lucid, and most importantly it's about things that matter.

See the quote in my sig for example.

It sucks that they're one of those hit and miss bands though. On each album I find several great songs, but most songs are just trash...but most bands are like this, so I don't blame them that much for it, because when they do hit, it's a home-run.

Conor Oberst is a good lyricist. LZ was right about the "hit and miss" thing. His stuff was better in the band Desaparacidos. Check out the song "Happiest Place On Earth" Off the album "Read Music Speak Spanish"

I heard that as a person Conor Oberst is a complete asshole. But he is a pretty good lyricist.

As for his current main focus, Bright Eyes, check out the album "Letting Off the Happiness"

I like the song "June on the West Coast" and "If Winter Ends"

The song "Padric My Prince" is pretty swell too. Also the song "City Has Sex"

I think he's good, much more than most give him credit for...but I have to agree he's very hit and miss. I imagine we will see some really great stuff from him when he matures a bit.

From where did you hear this?

He seems like a pretty cool guy to hang out with.

My girlfriend. I trust her judgement over most. Plus a few other people I know said the same. Conor is a snob.

What did he do?

Maybe he was just tired or something, I could imagine someone being snobby if they have to perform a show and then meet dozens of fans right after to sign something.

As for what my girlfriend told me about, I'm going to have to ask her. It's too late to call now. I'll talk to her later in the morning.

I've heard a couple of their records. I don't find them to be amazing but they have a couple of good songs. I thought you didn't have a high opinion of them LZ.

I didn't because I hadn't heard a lot of songs by them yet, just a few of the crappy ones.

Your class, your caste, your country, sect, your name or your tribe
There's people always dying trying to keep them alive
There are bodies decomposing in containers tonight
In an abandoned building where
A squatter's made a mural of a Mexican girl
With fifteen cans of spray paint in a chemical swirl
She's standing in the ashes at the end of the world
Four winds blowing through her hair

But when great Satan's gone, the whore of Babylon
She just can't sustain the pressure where it's placed
She caves

The Bible's blind, the Torah's deaf, the Qur'an is mute
If you burned them all together you'd be close to the truth still
They're poring over Sanskrit under Ivy League moons
While shadows lengthen in the sun
Cast on a school of meditation built to soften the times
And hold us at the center while the spiral unwinds
It's knocking over fences, crossing property lines
Four winds cry until it comes

And it's the sum of man
Slouching towards Bethlehem
A heart just can't contain all of that empty space
It breaks, it breaks, it breaks

Well, I went back to my rented Cadillac and company jet
Like a newly orphaned refugee, retracing my steps
All the way to Cassadaga to commune with the dead
They said, "You'd better look alive"
And I was off to old Dakota where a genocide sleeps
In the black hills, the bad lands, the calloused east
I buried my ballast, I made my peace
Heard four winds leveling the pines

But when great Satan's gone, the whore of Babylon
She just can't remain with all that outer space
She breaks, she breaks, she caves, she caves
