A JUDGE was yesterday criticised after jailing a man for only two years for raping a prostitute and referring to him as a “man of good character”.
Billy Keogh, a married father of six, raped the Croatian woman in a Waterford hotel, telling her afterwards that he was a garda and threatening to throw her out of the window.
Mr Justice Barry White suspended three years of the five-year sentence handed down to the Waterford businessman.
Women’s rights campaigners warned the decision to impose such a lenient sentence would not only stop prostitutes coming forward after being raped, but would also make men think the courts took attacks on sex workers less seriously.
