i have been reading about the Virgin Lands Project from the USSR Kazak type area and it seems a brilliant idea, however it went badly wrong with thousands of square miles of soil erosion and damage to the environment,
could it be done at the time and they ruined it or was it overly ambitious,
and could technocrats propose a similar scheme today?
i am eager for feedback as all the knowledge i got was from a map in the back of a AS level text book,
anyone?

I read a Wikipedia article about it. It seems to have been a good idea that was executed very poorly. They should have grown more than just wheat and should have had plenty of silos and such to place the harvested crops in.
Other Ideas I've seen include placing vast mirrors in orbit to reflect sunlight onto Siberia, greatly increasing the length of the growing season, and a scheme to irrigate the Sahara Desert with massive desalination plants on the coasts with large canals feed the smaller irrigation channels and provide transport for goods and crops.

Have some patience.
i dont usually use Sci & Environment its alot quieter than other forums,
as for these type of schemes are they within the realms of possibility given the structure of society and technology at the moment as they could revolutionise the planet in there own ways..
