How often have politicians said things on the campaign trail only to discard it as impassioned Rhetoric. After all Thats Politics we say But why is that?

For example, When Al Gore gave his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination, he called himself his Own man and said that he was For the people not the powerful. Than he went on to attack the least popular large corporations, big oil, and big insurance, and big drug companies. After which, Gore soared in the poles.

Shortly after the convention, Joseph Lieberman spent the next few days answering angry phone calls from corporations assuring them that Gore was pro-business and had only said what he said out of, Impassioned Rhetoric, (according to the Wall Street Journal)

And on that forked-tongue note, to be sounded again and again, the Gore-Lieberman ticket was formally launched for the drive to Election Day. Says Ralph Nader.

How anyone can take these fence-sitting democrats seriously is beyond me. The party of false hope and empty promises.

Exactly.

One thing that I find funny is that the DLC still blames Gore's semi-populist rhetoric for his "loss," but polls show that when he campaigned on such issues he gained in support. It's interesting to note that during the final weeks of the campaign he dropped the "against the powerful" stance almost entirely (as if adding Lieberman to the ticket wasn't enough).
