so next year will be the 20th anniversary of the coming down of the berlin wall.

whats your opinion on The Wall?

Do you think it was necessary? they should or shouldnt have built the thing?

I think they shouldnt have built it imo.....it was intended to stop the flow of people from east to west but I think they should have worked to improve conditions in the east to make people want to stay there rather than trapping them in like tigers at the zoo.

Thoughts?

When it was constructed the wall was called a wall for defense against fascism (Anti-Faschistische-Schutzmauer) but is is now acknowledged that the wall was constructed to prevent the loss of skilled personnel. It was necessary in the sense that if the wall had not been constructed, the DDR would not have been a viable economy unit, as it is impossible for any economic to function unless there is an adequate supply of human capital available.

However, socialists should oppose all restrictions on freedom of movement as a matter of principle, regardless of whether these restrictions exist in capitalist or workers states.

But, was an economy, planned by administrators and unaccountable bureaucrats, dynamic enough to offer the socialist population enough incentive to stay?

I dont think so personally.

Skilled people don't leave poorer countries when there is a sufficiently high quality of life. People often take less well paying jobs, for conditions that are better for them, despite having a smaller wage.

just an idea. and something to think about for the future.
