I want to write about the chauvinism and sexism I sometimes encounter being a FEMALE NHL Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings fan that I am.

First of all, when im on hockey forums I often get mistaken for a guy. I dont know whether to be annoyed at the chauvinistic piglet idea that women dont know sports like men do so if im on a hockey forum i have to be a man, or whether I should be flattered at the idea they must think of me as one of the guys because i can talk nhl hockey so well.

Also, when i was in grade 7 ( back in 1992), one of our teachers entered a contest where you had to choose which nhl hockey players you would have for an imaginary nhl team. The boys said they would make up lists for him to pick from. I said I would do it to. Of course the boys all laughed at me, "wtf do you know, you;d probably pic k some lame one just because he is good looking" well i made my list and the boys wanted to see mine more than anyone's too see what a girl would know. Imagine their surprise when my list turned out to be just like theirs. I really shut them up after that.

Then there are the guys who dont take female fans seriously because some females are only into the stars and the famous because they are wealthy and good looking.

I for one love hockey and I know quite a bit about it. And Im female to boot.

What are your ideas to help fight and combat sexism and discrimination of female sports fans such as myself? What can we do?

any ideas? would really appreciate them. Thanks.

Good thing you changed your nick. In my language it translates roughly to sweaty Lana:lol: So I can't help myself associating with a sweaty woman everytime I read it.

When I were in the US to watch some hockey games there were a sizeable amount of women watching too.

Sports attract a lot of sexists pigs and I don't see what you can do against it exepts just show them that you know as much as them about the sport and gather more women in the scene. Call them on their sexism everytime they utter it and prove them wrong.

.

omg !!!

I cracked up at this !!

Thanks for the laugh.

btw I guess I did fight the sexist pigs when i was in grade 7.

and , um, yeah. Must fight sexism whenever it rears its head.

although i can't help thinking, some women really are our own worst enemies.

For example on the Carey Price facebook groups I joined some of the females were like "Im not even a hockey fan, I hate hockey i just joined this group because Carey Price is like the cutest hottest thing to come out of Canada !!"

There are actually those kinds of comments on there.

WAT THE FUK ??

I dont even consider those real fans, just groupies.

They make us real female fans look bad. They dont sound smart. In fact they sound like they're as thick as two planks. :(

Your welcome with the laugh.

I think it's more of a common thing on forums in general to assume that all other posters are male until stated, but it's probably exacerbated by the fact that a lot of males use sports as a bonding thing. As far as combating the sexism on that particular forum I would just keep doing what you are doing...talk hockey with them and show them that you know the sport just as well as they do.

As for hockey, I have a new found love for the game after going to a brutal, well played playoff game between some minor league teams here in Washington. I'd love to get more into it.

I don't think it is men's thought if statistically, more males than females are hockey fans...

I don't follow any hockey but I've always loved the game. as for sexism, you must be able to show that you can be on an even plain with the males of the audience. also try to make sure that you keep away from the ditsy groupies

You know i was thinking about this very subject but differnt sport (Amreican Football)
We leftis are people too and lots of peoples forget that, we have to get to games and chalenge the sexist bullshit and racsim too like the Antifa-Hooligans and i was thinking what a better place to start with a team like the oakland raiders(i hate them by the way) but the raiders symbolize alot of things to lots of people thier considered a working class team and "lowlifes" "gangsters" "Losers" Love em waht a better place to start and thier team logo is a pirate! ANARCHIST IM TALKING TO YOU PEOPLES! think about it! im sure this could easily be aplied to hockey too.

1. The more visible Raiders fans are ridiculous. They're widely known as the people who get up in spikes and chains to watch a football game. They deserve to be mocked.
2. Raiders players are known from my end as the ones who get arrested multiple times for violent incidents, the ones who are known for spitting on people after the play is over, etc. Think Randy Moss. Yes, I know the police system is racist and anti-working-class, but the Raiders make just as much as any other team. Pittsburgh, Philly, Detroit and Chicago are also major working towns, but their teams just don't seem to have the reputation Oakland does. Right, fine, Detroit never wins, but that's a different story.

Really, someone should look into why the Raiders get the rap they do. Do they actually tend to get the more violent and unsportsmanlike players? If so, why, and if not, what's the deal (is it just the fans)?

As for the mascot thing, even though the Bucs are in a rich white resort town, their mascot kicks Oakland's ass. Come to think of it, so does Jon Gruden.

i wouldn't be insulted being mistaken for a guy on a hockey internet forum. There are alot more men on the internet and there alot more men into sports. So you are the probably one of the few women into internet and sports.

Thats the thing and thats what we could use that to our advantage?
again its just an idea and something us radical sport fans could do? is it possible?
