I semi-reliable friend of mine told me that America is billions of dollars in depth. Is this true?

It is. Thanks to Reaganomics. Clinton tried hard to reduce the debt, and i think he did a pretty damn good job.

The United States government is estimated to be around $6 trillion dollars in debt. Of course government funded social programs had nothing to do with that.
I know! We'll just blame it all on Reagan.

our national debt is a paper tiger
BTW, clinton did not even come close to getting us out of debt. he did, though, balance the budget, one of the few good things he did, but, of course, it was the republican congress that was really responsible for that, anyway.

I still don't see why you are republican? Are you rich...that must be it.
Cuz I'm pretty sure if you grew up poor you'd be like, fuck Bush....
or did you say you weren't rich but not poor.....
maybe we should have seen what would happen if you grew up like dirt poor in a crack house.

As I recall, Clinton, or if you prefer the Republican congress, did NOT balance the budget. This belief relies on accounting tricks worthy of Arthur Anderson. The only way the numbers came out correctly to promote this bit of capitalist propaganda was by counting the Social Security surplus as part of the discretionary budget, where it doesn't belong.
As for the cost of social programs, perhaps one of the right-wingers would care to compare and contrast the amount of corporate welfare to the amount of social spending. It would be an enlightening experience.
Also, one needs only to look at the figures to understand that Reagan greatly increased the national debt. That's not a matter of opinion, really. It's what the record shows. Too, Reagan had a Republican Senate, a stronger body than the House, for six of his eight years in office (1980-1986).

but, vox, congress overall was overwhelmingly democrat during both of reagans terms
And we blame him for the deficit?
it is congress that passes spending legislation! And the US congress was democrat-ruled in the 80's!

CI,
Do you know what "congress" means? Seriously. You may have read things in old books about a man and a woman having "congress."
Congress is composed of TWO bodies, CI: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate was REPUBLICAN from 1980-1986, and, because of differences in rules, it's also the stronger of the two bodies. I believe that Bob Dole was the majority leader for those six years, but I'd have to look it up.
So, when you say that congress was controlled by Democrats, I have to wonder what you mean.

I understand our government's structure, and that of the legislative branch, vox, and I don't appreciate your patronizing me.
The congress is made up of the house of representatives and the senate. Though the senate has more legislative power, it only has 2 representatives per state. Congress has many more representatives, as the # of representatives from each state is a function of the population of that state (I beleieve, for instance, that california has 54 congressional delegates in the house). This gives the house of representatives more absolute voting power.
