"Stupid Americans" - I'm developing an inkling as to why we'

I'm the Kid.

I want to start by affirming to everyone here (this is for the sake of the new people) that I am, in fact, pro-capitalism. Maybe I should start this off like an AA meeting:

Me: Hi, my name is American Kid and I'm a capitalist.

I was born here (Brighton MA, to be exact), I was raised here. It's my country, it's where I'm from, and though I don't agree with everything (most things) that go on here, I love it and support it and think it's the greatest shitty nation on a planet of shitty nations and that's the way I'll always feel. I think like Benjamin Franklin believed that it is Providential that this country was created and has gone on to prosper like no other the world has known, and though it is a bastion of corruption, greed and injustice, there is still enough resources and good people here to fight the good fight, and with courage, determination, and perserverance you use them to change things to make the world a better place.

That said, I am beginning to understand why the rest of the world thinks we're a bunch of fucking idiots, and I'll admit it's getting harder and harder each day to fight my own belief that maybe it's true.

I work with a young man from Lithuania. He's a super-cool guy and we've come to be good friends. He's very intelligent and comes from a good family back home. Because he's got an accent, (besides thinking he's Russian) everybody treats him like a fucking retard.

We had a customer last week who joked in (as we were discussing the military) that Lithuania probably had "like 4 guys in it's military". Tonight he came over for dinner and my father asked him if they had cars. Last year my friend from Ireland was asked if they had microwaves back home. He said no, and that they lived in trees and ate grass (yes, he's cool shit).

There's so many other stories, concerning JUST THESE TWO FRIENDS OF MINE. I work with a girl who's from Slovakia. She's a sweetheart, but doesn't speak such good English yet. People talk to her like they'd talk to a dog with three legs and a glass eye. Little do they know she, also, comes from a good family back home and is studying to become a psychology teacher (which puts the majority of our "clientel" out of her range; she could run circles around them, brain-wise).

It's not that we're stupid. We're just ignorant. I think it's a product of the fact that we're isolated by the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It's fascinating to me that kids in Europe can speak 2 or 3 languages fluently. But then I think about how close together all those foriegn countries are packed and it makes more sense. Here, if you can speak another language, it's like a fucking parlor trick or something.

That's just plain ignorance. My dad thinks everyone who lives in Africa lives in trees and runs around naked, which of course isn't true. A lot of people just don't respect cultural differences and we just have to deal with that. I personally have no bias toward or against anyone of any cultural background, even Americans (which I've recently realized). There will always be a few who set the stereotypes that follow the rest of us around we just have to reaffirm others that these are only stereotypes and that we and they aren't really like that. I'm not sure how exactly to do that but many people on the board are doing it, defying the stereotype that "youth are apolitical" and that we're all uneducated delinquents out to cause trouble for society.

I try not to stereotype americans, seeing as weather or not I like it, I am one. I know what you're talking about, and I hate it. It's unbearable. Even my friends do it. They talk about African countries consisting of 'huts' and that their military has 'guys with guns'. I'm even considering forgeting this one guy I hanging out with who thinks all black people don't speak proper english. Not all Americans are ignorant, but many are. Specifically most of the young people. While they will not resort to racial slurs, 'asian' jokes are common among youngsters. It pisses me off. It is prejiduce, weather or not they admit it; and it isn't good.

damn.. the world we live in. i may only be 16 but i know who i am and what i believe in. i know that most people in this world are close-minded to most of the other people out there because they dont understand them. my parents for example, although they wont openly admit this, are homophobes and racist. i have 10 uncles and i'd have to say that 9 of those 10 are racist against blacks and plenty of other people and will even talk shit about their fellow mexicans that are just out trying to get a job to feed their families and arent ashamed to sell oranges on the streets to do so. the world we live in is a sad place to be.

It is the little stuff, like foreign military presence and economic slavery that drives the masses to hate a country that thinks it is the judge, jury and executioner that people grow to resent.

Just being the US's neighbour to the south it is amusing meeting (some) americans who actually think I live in the snow all year round, and that we still burn kerosene.

I was browsing a US canoe racing forum when I saw something on there.

Starlight for sale, excellent condition, $1,100.

My immediate reaction was, How? I bought my Starlight for £350, although it probably wasn't in as good condition, but he polished it up really good so it looked like a completely different boat. My mum had to ask him if it was the boat. But $1,100 for a Starlight is a rip off, you can get an olympia copy which is like the one Kolgonzics uses for not much more than that.

Also this website seemed to be aimed at marathon racing, and i'd have to say that the Starlight actually sucks as a marathon boat, well maybe it isn't as bad as a Futura or Futura Starlight, but it still gets knocked around a bit too much.

Also looking at some of the other stuff. I'd have to say that prices are way overinflated in the US, how do people manage to sell that stuff at that price. I mean I know someone who's selling a Carbon Kevlar, Vac Pac Delta (probably the best marathon C1 of all time) with 2 boards, plus is going to carve them a knee block for £400, but some people are looking for the boat on it's own for like $700. Crazy man, Crazy.

My roommate is from Ethiopia and when we're in DC (which has tens of thousands of Ethiopians) everyone's cool about it. But if we go into the suburbs for whatever reason, people act as if she fell from Mars. One person asked her if they eat dogs in Ethiopia. Another, trying to look like he was cool with black people, asked if Ethiopia was near Nubia.

But I've been to Ethiopia myself, and people there are just as ignorant about us as we are about them. America and Ethiopia deserve each other, I guess.

Living in england for half my life and being an american citizen during that time, I've learned... absolutley nothing to explain to me why europeans hate americans, they just do, and its not that they're bitter about the revolutionary war, its just that americans have so much to mock these days they find, they mock our american football as girly rugby players who need pads and rest breaks every time someone falls over. They mock american soccer as being the worst in the world, they mock americans for stereotypically being obesse (thank god I never had that problem), they mock americans because the average american has decides not to get aquainted to foreign customs and traditions while visiting other countries.

Americans are the joke of the world, and america is in denial of this and merely label people who don't like them as jealous, jealous of what? That you built an empire which only exists because the europeans built your nation?! and then you managed to kill of the native americans, oh wow big achievement there, automatic rifles and large armies are certainly no match for scattered tribes using bows. Americans are also viewed as bullies, and they really are just bullies, they use their size to get what they want, as every western nation has been able to do and has done, the italians did it (rome) the greeks did it, the spanish did it, the british did it, the french did it, and the germans did it, but the americans haven't, in their eyes, the americans didn't fight real enemies like the europeans did to deserve the pride and respect they have from one another, instead americans fought harmless natives and a wavering mexico. Though the europeans aren't innocent, the indians, the aborigines, and the africans were often victims too, they were never actually in danger of extinction, as the american indian was. Another thing that bugs europeans is that americans act like they won both world wars, and this greatly offends europeans (in school squabbles I brought this up and often ended up with a bloody nose and new education on why Great Britain won world war II, though the french probably have another version aswell) because to them america didn't, the french think they were the ones that held the germans back all through world war I, being the largest victim next to russia, and they did hold Germany back the whole time, britain thinks their air force saved the world and winston churchill single handedly defeated the germans, and the germans mutter hostily "we could've won". America has alot of arrogance over nothing and that angers europeans who have alot of arrogance too, but atleast they have some considerable cultural achievements.

Actually there was another good article call MAD THAI, it features emails that are upset because a restraunt made an advertisement of the thai king with blond highlights, jewled sunglasses and and adidas shirt. Man you should read the emails to see how hurt the thai actually were, some emails were full of anger but some were just saddened that americans would apparently mock a leader they loved so dearly.

They even made a website, not alot of effort put into it, mostly links to other sites. Here is a signing in their guest book from a thai.

America has alot of arrogance over nothing and that angers europeans who have alot of arrogance too, but atleast they have some considerable cultural achievements.

Actually, African American rythm & blues are only half the story.

1/2 of rock and roll came from blue-collar rural anglo music like country and bluegrass, it was a 50/50 proposition. I took "The History of Rock and Roll" as one of my college music requirements. Is it just coincedence that the USA has sprouted the vast majority of revolutionary inventions in the last 150 years? NO, because certain countries have the resources, ideologies and social attitudes that encourage individual achievement and original thinking, that is precisely what the US demonstrates. Free will, a positive atitude, and the will to take a chance.

Take the 11th of September 2001 for instance. Most people in the US hadn't a clue that there was so much hatred in the world directed at them, after the event most of them don't have a clue why there is so much hatred directed at them.

Hell, several months before I was having a discussion with some friends about crashing planes into buildings as a terrorist act (we thought that the Whitehouse, the Pentagon and the statue of Liberty were the best options). The discussion was sparked off by a friend (who had just returned from visiting his brother in the US) commenting about the lax security on internal flights.
Ultimately, it is the US' arrogant 'we are better than you' attitude that pisses most people off. That and a few select bits of foriegn policy.
I generally dislike the US, but the current administration has turned that dislike into a burning rage.
