Radical Groups (http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/viewGroups.asp?catid=11)
http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/viewGroups.asp?catid=11
The term “radical” is generally applied to groups and individuals seeking to transform or destroy part or all of the social order. This section of DiscoverTheNetworks examines leftist groups that describe themselves as “revolutionary” or “radical” and are overtly dedicated to the overthrow of the U.S. government and American institutions.
The first appearance of the word “radical” in a political context occurred in England in 1797, when Charles James Fox, Britain's first foreign secretary, called for a “radical reform” that would extend to all his countrymen the right to vote in general elections. The term thereafter was used to identify anyone who similarly supported the movement for parliamentary reform, meaning the expansion of voting privileges (traditionally reserved for upper levels of property holders) to less-wealthy and broader segments of the working-class population. When the Reform Act of 1867 widened the right of suffrage in this manner, the English Radicals spearheaded efforts to organize the newly eligible voters, and helped transform the Whig parliamentary faction into the Liberal Party. The Radicals’ efforts on behalf of working-class voting rights won them the undivided allegiance of the trade unions.
The English Radicals of the 19th century were influenced by philosophical tenets which held that men are able to control and alter their social environment by collective action. Because these assumptions also underlay communist theories of social reform, the label “radical” became, over time, synonymous with communists and other advocates of violent social change; consequently, its evolved meaning no longer applied to the gradualist reformers of an earlier era. Communist doctrine holds that just as society evolved from feudalism to capitalism, it will inexorably progress still further to socialism and eventually communism. Communists consider socialism to be an intermediary step between capitalism (out of which socialism is said to grow) and communism. That is, communism (whose motto is "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs") is deemed a further development or "higher stage" of socialism (whose motto is "From each according to his ability, to each according to his deeds") -- communism being the more "perfect" of two systems that both advocate public ownership of the means of production and centralized planning.Communists (unlike socialists) believe that capitalism cannot be subtly incorporated into a new socialist order, and cannot be used as a convenient means to a more desirable end, but rather must be crushed by revolutionary means. Communists exhort the working classes to overthrow the "capitalist dictatorship" and establish a classless society by force -- using armed strength to utterly crush the existing "ruling class." Because communism and radicalism share an overriding desire to dramatically transform the existing society and its institutions, it is not surprising that many of the groups profiled in this section of DiscoverTheNetworks embrace communism and seek to dismantle capitalism – with all its allegedly inherent injustices.
