Please listen for a moment.

The president of the University of Florida is planning to cut the Philosophy PhD program at our school, effectively rendering our degrees worthless. I would REALLY REALLY REALLY appreciate it if you took 3 minutes out of your day and signed the petition to help stop this. Email me for the link, since the site won't let me post one. Please forward this note - you'd be doing all college students a favor.

I appreciate it.

Nah,you have to have over 25 posts to be able to do that, I think it's an anti-spam thing.

Is that legal?

It's a sad, sad day when a university eliminates the last course that allows its students to think for themselves...

I just emailed the link out - I really appreciate it guys. Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, but I've been busy trying to help spread the news and get signatures. Hope you can all sign it soon - the decision is final on May 12th, so I'll keep everybody updated.

Again, I really appreciate it, and so does the University of Florida!

this is retarded. A science course also teaches you to "think for yourself". Goddamn you arrogant philosopher majors.

agreed, but philosophy teaches you to think in ways sciences dont. i think they complement each other, one being partly useless wihtout the other.

also i think that once the link gets out this should eb moved to events and propaganda, or a new thread be made over there. because no one ever looks at the philosphy forum nowadays.

I don't want to sound evil or anything but lets think philosophically about philosophy class. Wouldn't a PRIVATE owner have the power to warp tomorrow's philosophers' thoughts? The head of the University I'm sure could change the curriculum to give philosophers the wrong idea about the truth, Socialism. So not only would more people not know the truth but people who have a certification to talk all day about government could hurt our cause. I'm not going to sign, sorry.

I would like to thank everybody for their support so far, and especially Post-Something for posting the link. I just got Noam Chomsky to sign our petition - he's #1,297 on the list :)

In response to Arkatsson, I would like to emphasize that the Philosophy department is not privately owned. UF is a public university, and as an undergraduate Philosophy major, I know first hand that you get exposed to many different viewpoints. In the same semester, I can have one teacher who is hardcore leftist and another who thinks Capitalism is the highest good. Philosophy is about examining all sides, and trying to find the truth in the matter being examined. UF does a good job of adhering to this in the Philosophy department, and I'd like to see it continue (hence the petition haha).

Thanks again for the support - together, we can build a better world.

I don't think the intelligentsia would allow that, do you?

I hope all goes well, I've emailed about ten of my friends about it as well, so we should be spreading the word fairly quickly.

Oh, and well done for getting Chomsky to sign!

Thanks for your help bro. Monday marks the final decision, so I'll let everybody know how it works out. Till then, keep struggling!

Just wanted to let everybody know we won! Well, mostly. They froze the program for the next few years (meaning no new entries will be admitted) but at least they didn't cut it. This was the only change made to the entire budget cut system, so I wanted to thank everybody who helped! I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP AND SUPPORT! :)
