View Full Version : Where do you get your news?
Renewed Revolution

Let's face it, everything you turn on the tube it's nothing but lies, censorship, and propaganda everywhere you look, so where do you get your news? Alternative websites, or newspapers, or something else. I like the site AlterNet, but I am not sure that is the best out there. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

"FPIF" is really good for analyzing foreign policy in my view...
I somehow can't post a link though, since I don't have enough posts, so just do a Google search :P.

I get my “news” from a variety of sources.
Usually I read The Guardian for headlines and daily news and I will check on Buzzflash for daily American politics. I visit Counter Punch and sometimes Z net for more in depth analysis on political issues. I'll watch or listen to Democracy Now! and sometimes visit Aljazzera's website. There are some other Internet sources I utilize but those are the one I most frequent, particularly The Guardian and Counter Punch...and Indy Media sources for local news.
For print media I read the local communist, anarchist, and socialist rags every now and then...and now that I think about it I also read a variety of blogs as well for news.

I get most of my news from yahoo groups, there are great people who search the internet for great articles or are able to get real news from communist groups and they post them, and you'll get the news in email form in a lovely little package. I suggest searching yahoo groups for good groups. Additionally, I am subscribed to "The Plough", an Irish newsletter service by the Irish Republican Socialist Party. It's not a bad source for information in Ireland. If you do a google search it will come up. The email address that you mail to subscribe to is a type-o, though, I think. It's "john.martinps". Hope that helps some. -Joe

Hopefully that will be of some help. You will pretty generally get good news from most communist yahoo groups. You have to be careful though, because I hear that the fascist law enforcement agencies of the world are going to try to crack down on internet usage that is "terrorist", in other words, anything that challenges in any way their imperialism. -Joe

I use google news and read articles that appear trustworthy. Other than that I enjoy ZNet, Monthly Review, MR Zine, and SF Chronicle.

The BBC, but I can't pick up World Service on my radio anymore, and that's how I like my news delivered to me, so now I have to listen to fuckin' CNN. <_< At least I talked my mom out of watching... Glenn Beck... *shutter*

Die Neue Zeit

If I have to watch the evening news, it's CBC. Most of the time, I get my INTERNATIONAL news - which is the only kind of news I really care about - off the web (and it shows, given that national newspapers are finding it more difficult to sell their crap).

BBC is alright, but it is not even close to being as biased and as censored as the American "news" networks.

Yeah. I hate him! He's almost as annoying as Glenn Beck! He's racist, ultra-nationalist, OBVIOUSLY conservative and capitalistic; hell, he's like a Bill O'Reilly clone, except he hates immigrants more than anyone else.

well the basics, CNN, BBC, yahoo.com. those sites give me a basic outlook. i read the NY Times for sports. To get the "real news", workers weekly and other worker papers i can get for free or cheaply. however, it has been noted that the "christian science monitor", is the most moderate paper (all the facts, no bs). i know i know, sounds crazy but it actually is true. also, "mental floss" gives me a well rounded look at general science topics and current events that are under the radar. plus other random sites and this site. I watch Fox News to cheer me up since it makes me laugh so hard. "Fair and Balanced"?! yeah and american democracy actually works! BULLSHIT!

As a rule of thumb (or wrist, if you will), you can get your news from any source, so long as you've trained yourself to filter the lies of capitalist paid media. Generally, any pro-capitalist or anti-communist thing said on the media is a lie, or is not the full truth. Don't go to specifically conservative news, though, that is a bit more difficult to get ANY relevant information from. Pretty much everything they say is a lie, so you're not learning anything. -Joe

Yeah, I'd like to piggyback on that if you don't mind, Joe the Red.
As you said, Bjork, all of us here (or hopefully all of us here) are aware of the fact that the so-called news is actually just capitalist-imperialist propaganda that just reflects the interests of the bourgeoisie and how much of the story they're willing to let the people know at any given time, but the trick is not finding a news source that isn't this way, (because they all are, basically. And any attempts to create a revolutionary news source, such as Mumia Abu Jamal's, are viciously surpressed) it's being able to see the (materialist dialectical) truth that lies behind the veil of lies with which the ruling class tries to conceal it. If one can do that, then, hell, even CNN is a reliable news source!
That being said, there are certain news sources for which it is a bit easier to sift through the imperialist garbage in one's quest for the truth of the matter. I like Al Jazeera and the BBC, who, while unquestionable representing the "two outmodeds" of Western imperialism and Islamo-fascsim, are just less full-of-shit than the good ol' American media. I don't know if you're in America or not, but for me these two are healthy alternatives...
Oh, and there's always Revolution newspaper, the voice of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA, if you're interested in some really inspiring print journalism. i' not a party member myself, but their perspective has really opened up my world :)

Well put. Always good to offer agreement to statements. Always remember that the U.S. media is on the payroll of the bourgeois elitists with the money. Therefore, no matter how they claim that they are "neutral" in government and political affairs, they will always be relaying the "news" that the fat aristocracy wants the public to "know". -Joe

I like to get my news from; "The Colbert Report", The Daily Show With Jon Stewart", "World Socialist Website", "People's Weekly World", "The Militant", and "Fight Back!".
I don't read or watch any direct socialist or independent media unless I need arguments to debate with people ;) I find it more entertaining to question everything that is showed on the mass-media and filter out stuff, THEN go search even more reactionary web sites and see how they put it, so I usually find out what it's all about.
It's something like:
CNN: "Chavez censors the simpsons"
Globovisión, Venezuela: "HAHA, now we're gonna put in BAYWATCH instead of the simpsons so we can ridicule him even more!"
Says everything...

As for television, you won't find much left oriented news on TV unless you have access to satellite television.

I get most of "my" news from the "mainstream" media. sure, it biased and blah blah but the "alternative" media seems to be nothing but an "update" or "patch" for it. And all of it isn't lies, that's ridiculous.

I concur. Alex Jones ranted (whined would be the better term) on about Noam Chomsky being a shill to the New World Order.
CNN International is tolerable. Corporate media is pure adultery for the brain, though.
