Well, I’ve been lurking on RevLeft for some 3 years now, but have only recently got around to posting (largely due to a recent abundance of copious free time).
Politcally I’m not sure what to call myself: anarchist, left communist, Marxist? I draw inspiration from all of these traditions. That being said, I started off as being a socialist, of a utopian variety, primarely being motivated by utilitarian concerns, and my disgust with the failure of capitalism to provide for the overwhelming majority of the population on both a local and global scale.
Lurking on RevLeft over these last few years motivated me to do more research, and in large part thanks to that, I have moved away from a purely utilitarian justification of socialism, to more political concerns such as that with freedom. I now not only believe that capitalism is a terrible system consequentially, but that it is actually opressive. As well, largely through the influence of the works of RedStar2000 (whose antics I had always found entertaining, and which are much missed) I also became fiercly democratic, being forced to reexamine my old more authoritarian motivations, and recognizing that they could not be sustained.
Lastly, a note on the avatar: I’m not a Leninst, but well, Soviet propaganda is just cool. Not to mention, there’s just something sexy about that goatee of Lenin’s. :D
Well, I look forward to being an active member of RevLeft’s community.
Cheers
