It bugs me because I don't think a government that has backed feudalism in Nepal, that runs a society with immense class stratification, that turned over communist (notice my lack of quotes) dissidents in Chile to Pinochet, that counts the Clintons among its friends, and that has the backing of virtually every rightist and cappy organisation and institution in Hong Kong and in Taiwan can be associated with the left. A single multinational sweatshop is enough to disqualify any government and any society from being a dictatorship of the proletariat. Beijing is about as socialist as New Labour and the SI.

you're dead right mate, there is nothing socialist or communist about the "peoples republic of china".
there is no workers control, no workers democracy and it would seem, looking from the outside in, that any benefits to the workers and peasants resulting from chairman maos rule have long since been eroded.
the proc has become yet another dictatorship dressed in "communist" clothes whilst carrying out the same economic and social policies of its capitalist "enemy".

I blame it on Hu Jintao.

Yes, I am boycotting the Olympics, (not that I ever paid attention to them anyway), because of China's cruel treatment of Tibet and its deliberate oppression in the name of whatever the hell they call their ideology now. There was never anything remotely "Marxist" about China but unfortunately most people will never realize that because where do they get their news, the BBC and CNN!
