View Full Version : Why do people do irrelevant things at protests?

I'm sorry if I can't ask this here. I've seen a few videos of protests. These were of leftists protesting various things. Anyway, the protesters did some weird stuff. Here are some examples: One group of girls wore flowery dresses and started singing "You are my Sunshine". Another guy wore a green helmet and tried to give the police chocolate candy. And then there was this girl dressed in pink and she had an airhorn and a wig.
I don't see the point in giving out candy and singing "You are my Sunshine." I don't mind these acts, I'm just confused. Are they trying to make an artistic statement? Do you know why people do this?
I'm guessing a lot of you have been to protests and would know why.
Please tell me. Thanks.

Most people know marching is not working, so you have two camps, those that think we need to escalate into violent protests and occupy the streets (meaning crushing the police so the police have to retreat like they did Paris 1968) and those that want to avoid violent protests so try anything else.
Montreal WTO protest showed this well when you literally had the march break off to those that charged the police lines (that was kinda was like the charge of the light brigade as the police was heavily fortified so they didn't budge a inch and the fight was one side were the police were able to beat the crap out of protesters without taking any serious injuries) while other went to march far from the police were the police really didn't care about them as they were far from were the WTO meeting was talking place.

I've done my fair share of jackassery at protests and I think its the mood. Protests are always full of energy, excitement, anticipation of possible conflict, etc. Its the stafe on which we get to dream out loud in front of the world and sometimes people, myself included, get intoxicated with that kind of romanticism.

it brings out the freaks
many people are only 'rebels' coz they are freaks and so will join any cause for some social interaction
however they remain freaks dispite of this and act like twats,
my theory,

If you're at a protest, why not have fun?

Yes, but I don't see why you would need to sing kid songs and pick flowers.

The revolution is a celebration of life. We don't have to be serious all the time. Remember to stop and put the roses in a soldier's gun. ;)

Yes, but that wasn't what they were doing. They were just picking flowers and one started discussing drugs. They could at least be relevant.

Theres always going to be weird people.
Not everyone is a Marxist or Anarchist revolutionary...yet.
Let them enjoy themselves. At least they are at the protest

I would still like to understand, but I guess everyone is as lost as me on this topic, maybe?

I can't say why they were acting weird, but I think it's good that they were making a good time of it. Protesting, activism, and the like should be things that people enjoy, and if that means doing what these people did, then so be it.

My question is why go to protests when you get locked in jail, put in the paper, and forgotten a week later?

Because most people are unintelligent fuckwits and love to feel like that are accomplishing something even though they are running around like tools and should probably read a book.
I know, its a generalization, but i can't help but feel most people who say they are "leftists" read the wikipedia definition and spout shit out of their mouths.
I'm not exactly well-read person, but damn.

People do plenty of irrelevant stuff all the time, that's what life is about, you could even consider the protest itself to be irrelevant, because after all, what do most protests acomplish?

Well as seeing youve never been to a protest after you go to a couple of them youll start to notice that it is usaully the same group of dedicated people who go constantly and i guese after a while you get bored i mean we have been protesting the iraq war for how long? people get frustrated you know and some time a protest is a nice way of letting go and have fun you know smoke a couple of bowls talk revolution dance around etc... i dont see no harm in it really cuase the media ignores us anyways and shit i like to let loose my self but then some times their are people who do very stupid shit honestly that hurts us more than help us but eh ITS NOT MY REVOLUTION IF I CANT DANCE DAMIT!
but on a seroius note we do got to step up the anti war efforts in the States these protest arent getting us no where i think its time to step it up not violently tho im talking about some civil disobedience we need some of that shit and need some more direct actions to like bocking supply stations that gives the military the weopons they need to kill with or something im just throwing that out their

I think your question pertains to humanity in a general sense. The mood at most protests, unless they're done with immediate rage after an event, is similar to the mood you would feel at a party. It's fun to protest.

I understand they just want to have fun, but I don't understand randomness. Maybe I have to be at the protest itself and see everything that goes on, then things might not seem irrelevant. Maybe.

I have fun at protests (when not getting beaten up), but I've never felt the need to dress up like a fucking mime or partake in some hippy mood jiving.
All it does is show the community "Hey, look, they care so much about this issue, they came to protest dressed like clowns."

I think it's largely a matter of the social composition of the protest. This MayDay will see a shutdown of the west coast docks led by the International Longshore Workers' Union to protest the Iraq occupation. I would imagine the dockworkers will dress as they usually do and I doubt they'll bring flowers. Need more of that, eh?
