Today marks the anniversary of the 1916 Dublin Easter Uprising.

Here in America, this, along with pretty much all Irish history and the struggle with Britain/Civil War, is pretty much skipped over in history classes. Hell, they barely mention the Russian revolution!

Anyway, I think this was an interesting rebellion for a number of reasons. First, it was done by not that many people with not that many guns and made a big impact (course, it took some executions to make the impact ). The courage it must have taken to actually go out, stand up, and seize property is astounding.

Secondly, the ability of the revolutionaries to look past ideology and unite around a common goal, and be willing to scarifice their lives for it, is also amazing. I know several college students who won't march if a group they dislike organizes it.

By the way, some of my family was still in Ireland at this time. My Grandpa told me about this from what he had heard from his dad back in the day.
