I love Joy Division. My dad saw 'em live a few times, including when they were Warsaw, so obviously they've left an indelible mark on our family. My favourite song has to be Shadowplay.

it's funny that joy division didn't get much trouble with their name. Did anyone see the movie about Ian Curtis, I thought it was pretty good.

One of my favourite bands, especially the old stuff like Digital and Leaders of Men.

I always took it as merely a shock statement against, shall we say, conventional music at the time. Similar to Crass' logo with the religious symbolism and the swastika.

How is Joy Division a shock statement?

They are an ok band, I like some songs by them such as the cliche Love Will Tear Us Apart (which was on the soundtrack to Donnie Darko) and She's Lost Control.

Joy Division was the name of forced Jewish sex slaves in Nazi Germany. They were used as prostitutes for good prisoners on concentration camps, and for Nazi soldiers.
Hence "Joy Division"
Thats how its a shock statement.

A rather fucking disgusting name, really.

Well Ian Curtis's politics were shite (he was a closet tory who romanticised nazi germany) but he was a great songwriter.

Favourite songs would be The only mistake, Dead souls then shadowplay and atmosphere as joint close thirds. Lots of great songs there, too many good ones to mention.

They got very little hastle about the name...but New Order got an article in of all places The Economist complaining about their name....because it also had fascist connotations.

I kinda liked the film cos it was 'pretty' and as the story of Joy Division it was OK but it really left out the whole punk scene context they were fully a part of. It depends on his wife's autobiography for this atmosphere.

The wife's biography is an interesting read. The weirdest idea I got from was the possibility that Ian Curtis faked his epilepsy having experienced epileptics in his work....she doesn't say that, I just took it from the book as a possibility. THe other idea I got from it that I liked was that he killed himself to avoid going to the USA that Monday....America might be bad, but its not that bad :)

I hate one song by Joy Division : Love Will Tear Us Apart.
