As a worker at this business this is close to home. They recently Voted 99% to go on strike. They want the Lower Mainland area to go on strike while the other zones will have increased union dues to pay for an extended strike.
The best option IMO would be a total province lockout to have the contract filled out quickly to prevent food from going bad but any action would be good. a month ago there was a huge paper article on worker treatment and wages that finally gave a voice to all the people i work with. There was one incident where everyone was called to the front and some of the Store managers statement as he yelled was things like "Your all fucking idiots", "Go get a fucking clue"*this was singled out at me* just everything in that vein. And this happens once a month at least
sorry if it seems incoherent but I've been up since 5:00 pm yesterday. I'll come back later with some local articles pertaining to the contract and any strike action that happens

^^^ Make sure it happens on a weekend so I can join the picket lines in solidarity.

I now need to make a call, a family friend and his ENTIRE family(mother father brother) all work at various Safeways. This is a serious matter.

It's a good thing I don't go to Save on Foods for groceries. However, I am within a 2 minute walk from a Safeway. I do hope that the workers get what they want. We really don't need another CUPE type strike to happen in Vancouver/BC again.

a contract is being voted on in the next few weeks at different places in our zone and not many people are happy. They want to accept the first offer which did not get rid of the tiers like promised and if a full time position at this store opens a person from like Vancouver can take it and gets first dibs at it.; and thats not the half of the problems in it
I'm definetly going to the meeting/vote on Sept. 2nd at the trade and convention center

The UFCW bureaucrats have a history of betrayals, and its necessary to fight against them. This strike, or failure of a strike to be called, create the conditions from which such a struggle can be effectively waged.

the meeting was an embarrassment to say the least. Donna Tremblay said maybe 4 words during the whole thing but 4 of the workers came drunk and didn't help in the slightest with there stupid ramblings. Frank did make it an extremely informal setting which was kind of nice and he did a decent job i think to avoid a strike but what we have is not enough.
Where i live it is fast becoming as expensive as the lower mainland and the starting wage is still 8.75( 8.00 for courtesy clerk) at the local store. I can't imagine how hard it would be for a single mother who needs to support a family in town on that kind of wage
