View Full Version : Sports - What do you think is the biggest capitalist sport?

I was thinking about this while watching early morning tv. I personally think that the biggest capitalistic sport is the 'great american' game of baseball with its huge contracts and the fact that its players feel no real sportsmanship anymore, or loyalty to the fans. It saddens me to say this as I play baseball. I would just like to hear all of your opinions.

actually, auto racing is the biggest sport in the us by measure of attendance and spectatorship
It is kind of sad as to what happened to baseball, but if that is what the market pays for pro athletes, then that is what it pays. That is the free market economy

I am actually a huge fan of Baseball and have always been. I played for a while in high school but i got bored of playing it. Anyways, the amount baseball players get paid is ridiculous, even the Capitalists should agree here that its just straight out ludicrus. Its not right that they should get millions upon millions of dollars because they are good at a certain sport.. but whatever, baseball is a great sport and i still enjoy it (although it'd be better if the players got off steroids)..

In my sport sponsorship is highly restricted and large scale funding is only available to those who are means tested, even then it's only about £20,000 a year maximum you can get and for that you have to be unemployed and very good.
As a result you get some of the most sportsmen like people as competitors such as John Badelek.

But not the worlds greatest athletes, as the US has

I've already said that Tim Brabents is better than Greg Barton. Therefore your assertion that in my sport the US produces better athletes than the UK is false.
Anyway, Australia are the world champions in most sports.

i agree... the fact that anyone can think that they are worth millions of dollars a year is insane. Alex rodriguez signed that contract for what... 240 sumthing million dollars.

What sport are you talking about?
The US has the most medals at the olympics, not australia. How do you figure australia has better athletes? The winner of the olympic decathlon is considered the worlds greatest athlete
The olympic decathlon winner is considered the worlds greatest athlete. The USA has had more decathlon winners than anyone.
What more needs to be said?

the US isnt the best at every sport! how the hell did you come up with that? One sport the US will never be the best at is hockey, and another is Rugby, the Canadians beat the US at both of those :)

We are not the best at every sport, but we are the best at every sport we want to be at.
The best measure of athleticism among nations is the olympics, and we rule the summer olympics, and now the winter olympics also, bottom line.

All pro. sporting events are decided by a handfully of very powerfull bookies in Las Vagas. College sports, although they have there flaws, is were you see true heart and sportsmanship.

C'mon, dude. Not all pro sports are rigged. Did mankind fake the moon landing too? Did the statue of mother mary cry a real tear at the vatican? Did they find a crashed UFO in roswell also?

Yeah i know all sports arn't rigged. Its funny you mentioned ufos, the us congress passed a law in the 50s that does not alow us human citizens to come in contact with aliens are there ufos. But the us denys any knowledge of aliens. oh yeah back to sports, I'm almost willing to bet that vagas has something to do with 30% of all pro sports in the us.

How do you see the correlation between a sporting event and the moon landing? With the moon landing were people making bets? No, there was no money involved with the public. So that makes no sense to say that. Although a lot of sports are rigged, it is true. The only one i can think of at the moment is Formula One Racing. Michea; Schumacher's team mate purposely loses so that micheal wins to get more points in the drivers standings. I remember i was watching a race once and his partner pulled over to the side of the road on the last lap, then let him pass.

That is not rigging an event, that is doing what is best for the team

A-rod FUCKIN-SUCKS.
Garciaparra's the best shortstop in the AL. I remember at the end of I think the '99 season, after the last game of the playoffs, shit maybe it was the 2000 season, we lost the last game at home at Fenway. As everyone was slowly, sadly streaming out of their seats, down the ailes, he stood up on the dug-out and yelled "thank you" to everyone. He's a class act. He deserves whatever he makes for that alone.
Though the inflated salaries that pro atheletes make are, admittedly, usually obscene. Everyone knows that. But it's just the way it is. It's their job, and it's the nature of our beasts. We're all just envious. I am. Actually, as a matter of fact, I fuckin' HATE Garciaparra. That fuckin' cocksucker.......Son of a....... He swings a piece of wood and runs around in circles for a living. I hate him. He-ugh, who am I fooling? I'm a self-hating Red Sox fan (as we all only can be, really) who's always going to come back and pay 30 bucks a seat just to watch them play well an entire season, all summer long, and then lose it all and break my heart come fall. I can't help it. But I love 'em.

Cockfighting..................you didn't just invoke cockfighting...............
:)
Izm may have some goofy, dizzy communistic leanings bouncing around inside his head, but if any of you guys ever step to him, I'll put a fuckin' bullet in your head!
Cockfighting...........Aw, Izm you don't even know......that's great......
Actually last summer an Irish friend of mine worked at the mall at a place where they stitched words and shit into things like hats and visors. It was this big monstrosity of a push cart with like a hundred spools of thread sticking out everywhere. It was right before he was leaving to go back home and I asked him if he could do a visor for me. He was leaving in a day and said he'd do it for free, he didn't care. So I picked out a blue visor and had him stitch on it for me:
"DIV 1
COCK-FIGHTING CHAMPION"
It came out great. I fucking love it. I actually wore it to my best friend's engagement party last week.
Cockfighting......................:)

WHatever, give me an AK, and I;ll shoot any cock who dares to step up to my cock, my cock is bigger than any of yours, and it bites hard, so watch out young ones and old ones, my cock has seen a lot of action, and it can get pretty pissed off, so don't step on my political beleiefs or I will unleash 'el' Thunder'

The best measure of athleticism among nations is the olympics, and we rule the summer olympics, and now the winter olympics also, bottom line.
It is the general opinion of people who participate in most amature sports that the olympics spoil their sports by changing the format so that it fits in with the olympic layout. The only exception is athletics which the olympics are geared around.
The World Championships are a far more important event than the olympics, reason? 10 events at a competition is not as important as 27, that's why the ICF (http://www.canoeicf.org) does not seem to hold olympic results. But everyone peaks for the worlds the year before the olympics, hmmm, why could that be? Oh yes they want to be on TV.

The biggest capitalist sport is football or hockey right now. These are the popular sports that everyone loves. The two generate big bucks through ticket sales, merchandising, and advertisment.
Baseball? Come on that sport has been destroyed by communists. Ever since the unions walked out in 90 or 91, my interest in the sport has diminished to zero. It is sad really. Not even America's favorite past time is safe from leftist destruction.
The sports player who is paid excessively is unfair you say. I beg to differ, as this is a concept know as economic rent paid for special skills. If someone is willing to pay them that kind of money it is right. I don't write the checks, so why should I be offended. If you dont like it don't watch ther games or buy the merchandise.
It is sad what happened to the Avalanche this year. RED WINGS SUCK!

im from so cal, with a ton of friends as lakers fans, but i must say that i thought the kings were going to win. i dont pay much attention to basketball, but i think they just choked a little when the pressure was high. next year though, i think the kings will beat the lakers without much of a problem.
