What is art?

I've been pondering this question for a while, and so far I have not arrived at any conclusion. All I can say is that is is some form of organized expression that is meant to have some sort of aesthetic appeal.

Art is in the eye of the beholder. However, here is a discourse by philosopher Derek Matravers on art.

What is aesthetic appeal?

It is the the efficiency of something to appeal itself to you by its visual design. I would define art as an object or a material object(s) able to provide you with a deep aesthetic experience, in the way that it makes you feel, whether it be pleasurable, horrifying, or intriguing. And the quality of art can be critiqued and evaluated for its quality based on those impressions and the tools enabling that emotional impact.

But music is also regarded as art, really.

There is no such thing as art, there are only atoms arranged in certain ways, and energy moving in certain ways.

Any attempt to tell you otherwise should be ignored.

Just to clarify, that was a joke, right?

Well, to be fair... what Apathy Maybe said is correct.

But, as was said, it is the way those atoms are arranged that makes up pieces of art, and everything else.

I would argue that looking (or sensing in some other way) at (good) art is to be interested. Many things interests us, things which (seem) to be chaotic, or perplexing patterns, etc. As I said last paragraph, though, in the end it is all organized.

I don't know what the definition of art is. It's very difficult to give a definition, because art, in my opinion, is a subjective matter.

I think there are some limitations on what it is though. Art is human made. You don't call a beautiful landscape 'art' (not unless you're religious).

I know what I like and I know what I dislike. I like art with a political message, or more specifically a leftist political message. Stuff that fucks with your head or turns something pre-existing upside down in a poignant way.

Street art does that best imo.

art is art. we can't explain what art's to do to our life. art was complicated. same with if we progress about something.

So we don't know what art is, but you can explain what it was?

Anything man-made can be considered art.

The real question is, what is "good art", or is there such a thing?

art is anything you want it to be. if you created it, and your creation is your expression, then it should be considered art.

art, like what is "good", or "beautiful" or "just", is a word that is meaningless without a context. there is no such thing as a Form of "art", contrary to what the old man Plato said.

Simple.

art, like what is "good", or "beautiful" or "just", is a word that is meaningless without a context.

So given our predominantly western, capitalist-racist-dominated "context" that finds a market for medieval relics and modern abstract conceptual whatever art, what is "art" in said context?
