I used this list to add to the poll: 100 Greatest Guitar Solos (http://guitar.about.com/library/bl100greatest.htm)
It's a pretty lame list so I expect a lot of people voting other.
Anyway, I voted other, namely Mark Knopfler - Sultans of Swing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_SEULZIHru0). :)
Oh yeah, it would be cool if you could post a link to the song as well.

Awesome thread LZ. :thumbup1:
Well out of that top ten, Crossroads is probably the best in my opinion and pretty amazing considering its anchored at the 17th fret the whole time...
And one I'm currently learning.
Personally, my favourite solo of all time is Mike Bloomfields 'Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong.' Unfortunately not on youtube, but first time I heard it, felt shivers down my spine, and that's when you know its good. There are loads of other favourites too, like SRV's Little Wing, Riveria Paradise, Buddy Guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_rd8y8A2oE)'s I Smell a Rat, Led Zep's Dazed and Confused & Heartbreaker, Hendrix's Born Under a Bad Sign, Gary Moore (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qplN4pm1MSE)'s Driftin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaWU5qcK3Zs)', Roy Buchanan's When a Guitar Plays The Blues and Wayfaring Pilgrim (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EI18-BeVzMI) and Sneaking Godzilla Through the Alley, Jeff Beck has some crazy, crazy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3H1XDswBBA) songs, Fleetwood Mac (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ8AcEYTEFY)'s (Pete Green) If You Let Me Love You, Electric Flag's Texas and Paul Kossoff/Free (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-2WK7y3sas) etc etc.

Well, I am not a sucker for guitar solo's. But I am voting on Stairway to Heaven, because everytime we (my band) play it I get all fuzzy hairs (you know what I mean). There are probably more technically "difficult" solos out there, but honestly, who gives a shit. In the end it's about what you get out of the music, not what you can do technically.

Slash's "November Rain" guitar solo is awesome. Other awesome Guns N' Roses guitar solos are near the end of "Estranged", the middle of "Don't Cry", and "Sweet Child O' Mine". His work with Velvet Revolver is excellent as well.

Good stuff I'm A Tiger, that Fleetwood Mac song is especially awesome.

Do you have a recording of your band playing that?
His work with Velvet Revolver is excellent as well.
I recently got two of their albums, they have some pretty good songs.

Yeah, VR are great, and Slash has a big part in it.

Gary Moore, 'The Loner', live at Milton Keynes August 1986.
Michael Schenker: 'Rock Bottom', live at Rock Palast, 2006.
To name but two that were left out.
You can hear the second of these at my YouTube Page:

The first, I have on tape, which I have just digitised.
I'll try and post it at YouTube one day.

I think they do only have two at the moment; they took forever with the second one, although not as long as "Chinese Democracy". :D

I'm sorry, I don't understand Anarchists.
Slash rocks no matter what band he's in; however, Velvet Revolver is not as good as Guns N' Roses were in their prime. Not even Slash can make up for Scott Weiland's vocals. :(

No ones gonna stand up for Robin Trower? Fine, i'll do it.
I like Too Rolling Stoned -- http://youtube.com/watch?v=RvWEu5g0X_c&feature=related
and Little Bit of Sympathy -- http://youtube.com/watch?v=DPX28MFcLGg&feature=related
I love how he always looks like he's havin sex with the music.
Unfortunately I couldn't find the live versions that were on the special release of Bridge of Sighs; they were definitely the best versions of these two songs.
Well out of that top ten, Crossroads is probably the best in my opinion
Hell ya, Crossroads is tight. Definitely agree with you there. Trower covers that, but he changes it too much for my taste. I like the original Clapton version.
EDIT: By the way, how do you use the option to wrap the HTML around the text? Doesn't seem to work the same way it did under the old version.

I really like the solo from One but don;t really like Metallica, so I don;t want to vote for it!
Actually fuck this, I just realised I should vote other: Tony Iommi- War Pigs.

But here is the greatest guitar solo ever

Most Hemdrix songs have great solos...as do most Stevie Ray Vaughan's. BB King also deserves a mention as does George Bensonn. OOHH and Eddy Hazel in Funkadelic.
I vote Hendrix BTW

What is everyones' opinion on Kurt Cobain of Nirvana? His guitar-playing ain't too shabby. Not to mention Zakk Wylde, lead guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne and founder of the Black Label Society.

Kurt Cobain's guitar playing is, actually, quite shabby (to a degree, intentionally). Great songwriter, though.
Led Zeppelin

Nirvana's solos are pretty basic. I don't really care much for them.
Though they're a great band, despite of this.

Marc Bolan/ T.REX- Ballroom of Mars. He overdubbed it, it harmonized and it is perfect.

Am I really the only one who thinks that the solo/solos in hotel california are the best?
Come on!
There's one frase in particular that I love.
Me and my friend went on a trip to Prague by bus from Gothenburg. And to kill time, we tried to make a top ten list.
The top 10 guitar solo frases. (Yes we're both musicians)
I can't recollect the entire list...well I only remember number one.
It's from Hotel California.
It's about 5:00 into the song. Almost exactly I think.
If you're planning to check it out you really should listen to the entire song, to get inte the right feeling u know.
Well, anyway. Great song, Amazing solos and the most genius frase ever recorded.
Peace Out

All Along the Watchtower is easily my favorite Hendrix song, and the solo is wicked, lyrics are great, I get an adrenaline rush everytime I listen to it. So I voted for that.
Comfortably Numb is a great song, so mellow, I've heard it's good to smoke weed to that (hell, ANY Pink Floyd).
Freebird is definitely a GREAT guitar solo, if all southern rock sounds like that then I oughtta listen to more.
Just a comment on Stairway to Heaven, I think it's an okay song, but I find it to be highly over-rated. (Just my two cents, as if anyone cares anyway.)
Dr Mindbender

I probably would have went for Johnny Greenwood in 'paranoid android' but since it's not there Dave Gilmour.

Yeah, Page is overrated in general. I mean, the guy is a great guitarist, no doubt, but the praise he gets is waaaay to much, imo.
