There's a quote floating around here (Marx maybe?) to the effect of "Those who don't work don't eat". Which seems generally pretty fair but I think it's way more complex.
People who are interested in just spanking around and blatantly avoiding being useful while still sucking resources are a separate category. What I'm talking about is, say, your spouse dies, your kid dies, and you just feel miserable for a month - or a year, or a decade, how do you deal with these sorts of things? How do you deal with people with legit reasons - and more difficultly, semi-legit reasons - for choosing not to work? What about the various types and categories of depression? What about someone who's feeling shitty and needs a day or a week off?
What if someone's having a serious personal crisis and just says, you know what, I need a month?
There are a few ways to deal with this depending on where you're coming from, but I'm curious to see what thoughts people have.
