I'm here doing research on how different digital spaces shape political discourse, looking at civility, politeness and civic engagement.

... looking at civility, politeness and civic engagement.

Unfortunately, you're on the wrong board for any of that. :glare:

Welcome.

Oh well, you never know. The "Chavez Nationalizes Venezuelan cement industry" thread graded out as polite, civil and civically engaged, using coding deveoped from Papacharissi (2004) and Felton & Kuhn (2001). The Tibet thread didn't grade so well though...

It breeds reactionary insults!

Hello, interesting project you've got going. If you don't mind my asking why are you doing it?

Also what are your politics ?

Hello Jazzratt. I'm a PhD student in rhetoric, so I think that makes me part of the lumpenproleteriat ;). My research interests include how people performance discursively in digital spaces, and how the shape and forum rules of those digital spaces inlfuences the discourse in them.

My politics are a bit different than what I've read here--in terms of political economy I value the insights of Karl Marx greatly, but I also value the insights of Smith, Ricardo, Say, etc. I see Marx and Smith as Gemini twins, each understanding what the other does not, one understanding plenty, one undersatnding want.

I only say this because you asked--I'm not here to bait anyone or contest the validity of your theory.

Hi! :)

Who's that in your avatar by the way?

Hi tiger. That's me, flexing madly in 2005, when I competed as an amateur strength athlete. It's my attempt to exude a dark, brooding presence on the internet.

:scared:

How much do you weigh, if you don't mind me asking? o_O

I don't mind answering Tiger. I am 200lbs right now, 218lbs when that picture was taken. As an academic, I'm a little less focused on physical training, and a little more focused on surviving day by day as a teacher and researcher .

Sorry, but you shouldn't expect me to o_O your muscles if you use that picture as your avatar. :P

What do you teach?

o_0 Well I doubt you'll be able to make claims like that without justifying them. :)

Also, that does not make you part of the lumpen proletariat. You're a student, you have no class. Just a little Marx for ya!

Tiger: I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but that's ok I'm often confused. To answer your question, I teach composition in my university's 1st year writing program.

Gunther: You're using the language of my course: claims, grounds (justification) and warrants. Also, I know that I am not a lumpenprole--it as my feeble attempt at an academic joke.

 No its quite good now that I get it.
I'm sorry that didn't catch it the first time.

Honestly, that is funny.
