Erm...btw, in the 1950 World Cup, USA beat England. And USA have been in nine World Cups whereas Portugal have only been in three. USA's best finish is 4th (1930), Portugal's is like 1/4 finals or something...

How do you figure I don't know the rules? I understand soccer, Americans just like sports that take more than just running around. We like sports like american football, basketball, and baseball, sports that take strength, toughness, and smarts as well as speed and endurance. Don't be mad because the USA is getting better at soccer, anyway. If we really started to like it, we would pump all kinds of $$$ into it and we would become #1 at it just like we are #1 at everything we want to be.

We don't have victories in the past because we don't care that much about soccer! What country are you from, anarchist??? Come play us in US football, basketball, hockey, or baseball. You won't even win 1 game!!!

Careful there Anarchist, those are some dangerous grounds to walk on. Racism is sort of a sensitive subject around there parts.
Now then, it's silly to debate sports, especially sports that are regional.
US excels in Basketball, and Baseball, and American Football. Europe has soccer, rugby, etc. UK has Cricket. Irland has hurling. China has... uh... something chinese I'm sure. They sure have the Wu Shu thing pretty covered.
All nations have a sport. Soccer may be one of the few unifying sports around. In a few more decades, mayhaps all the world will be in the world cup.

First of all this is a ridiculous thread, and doesn't belong in Socialism vs. Capitalism.
It's not like Portugal is socialist all of a sudden...
The Americans won rightfully, I don't know what the hell was going on with Portugal, but they played like shit.
Anyway on the issue of imigrants, you'll have to live with the fact that the USA as an immigration country has different views on nationality than most of europe.
It's kinda weird, people seem to be much prouder of their origin (they're always Irish, Mexican, African...) than people that actually live in those countrys, and yet manage to be wholeheartedly patriotic towards the USA.
Yet look at the netherlands, france, england...many of their players come from their colonies as well.
I say fuck nationality, I want to see a good football match.

excellent point libereco, English team is made up of "immigrants", as is the Irish, U.S., the south American countries, heck even Japan has one. However what does that really matter? Anarchist that claim was almost as stupid as StalinSoldier's saying that the U.S. is only strong because it has alliances.

I'm just kinda sick of people instrumentalising football for political debates...it's sport, not a battle.
Umm, baseball is the great american sport. But how many are "americans?" Take a look at where many great players are from. The best pitcher in baseball (ok, just my opinion) is Pedro Martinez and he's from DR. Even new blood like the amazing Alfonso Soriano or Ichiro are not "american." Sammy Sosa, Manny Ramirez, etc.
People in this country are not big soccer fans. This is not because soccer is an iferior sport as CI would have it. It's because its seen as an elitist sport (just the opposite of the rest of the world). Its rich kids in prep schools and the suburbs that really play soccer. I live and work in the 'hood and the kids I work with could care less about soccer (with a few possible exceptions). And those rich kids aren't planning on becoming professional athletes. A lot of basketball players are professional athletes because it was there only way out of poverty.
Just my thoughts.

FOR INFORMATION!
USA won a game against Colombia 2:1 back in 1994! so victory over Portugal definitely wasn't the first...
They were fourth back in 1930...
