As I was reading my e-mails I came across one from my very petit-bourgeois friend who sent me a link to a wikipedia page for the hip-hop group The Coup. Apparently they are Marxists. I listened to some of their music and for the first time in my life, I enjoyed hip-hop. I'd like to know what others think of them. I do not agree with some of the words they use such as 'motherfucker' as I find it very chauvinist, but regardless, their music is quite enjoyable.

I think the original term refers to slave owners who fathers a child to a slave (by rape or consent) and then takes no responsibility. I have heard it used be someone to describe their unknown father who left the mother.

I tend to use the word freely sometimes, but I find it perfect when someone really fucks me over, for example "that motherfucker just took my parking spot".

Dead Prez are excellent but it's hard for me to get past their black nationalism which occasionally spills over into blatant racism, but they're still damn good.

i agree. The Coup is the shit. and i LOVE Dead Prez, i just try to ignore some of the slightly racist shit. but songs like Hip Hop, Be Healthy, and Police State are just amazing.

mind sex has a really cool message, one that is never heard in mainstream hip-hop. but the song its self tends to annoy me a bit.

The Coup are pretty cool. 5 Million Ways is funny. The Axis of Justice radio show used to play them a lot, and they interviewed Boots Riley who talked about being recruited by the CPUSA when he was younger, by taking him to the beach with some hot girls or something.
