How did the western Allies (America, Britain and France) come to control half of Berlin when it was the Soviets who conquered the entire city?

This has always baffled me to say the least as you would think that the Soviets were in a very strong position to just say no to any western demands on a city that they themselves conquered.

I've always thought that the Soviet Army couldn't afford any more military conflicts any time soon.

It was decided at Yalta. Not sure why, but it might have something to do with the city's status as the capital of Nazi Germany. In any case, the agreement was there, and breaking it wasn't a smart option.

The Americans had made it to parts of Germany that were assigned to the Soviet occupation zone, but withdrew in July of 1945.
