I must agree with DD on this one, America didn't do shit in europe, although they did play a key role in the pacific.
Americans came to Europe in mid-1944, less than a year before Europe was free (may-1945), while Hitler has been pushing east since (1939). They were the Soviets who saved the European continent.

I didn't see any sovjets in France, belgium, Netherlands, Austria, west-germany, etc ,etc.
I always believed the combined efforts of a two-way front was one of the main reasons for succes.
Sovjets began their efforts sooner, but they were under siege in early 42, so they had no choice but to strike back.
The fact that the allied invaded occupied europe in '44 was a big bonus for the sovjets, because hitler was forced to spread his forces between 2 fronts.
You can't dismiss the battle of the bulge for one, can you?

CI, is, however, still an idiot. The UK does not 'serve' the US. They work in partnership on some things. But, contrary to popular belief, one is not "serving" the other.

Fabi,helping pay off germany's debt after WWII was smart for the US,it helped our trade relation with a totally different germany that was now our ally, we also rebuilt japan, and now those countries are among our strongest allies, so it appeared to me it was a pretty good decision, how do you argue it wasn't? Helping rebulid a defeated enemy-turned ally is a very smart investment. Now, the US, Japan, and germany are the most highly industrialized nations, powerful allies, and trading partners, have you not been paying attention to the last 50 yrs, or are u just in denial?

the first paragraph was a quote from someone else's post.... the second paragraph says that america HAD (or someone at least) to help germany to get back on its feet cause one of the reasons for WWII was the fact that noone gave a shit about germany after WWI.... and we know what that lead to...
i dont care if it was an investment.... but it was necessary to avoid WWIII---- i think we actually have the same opinion there... just a misunderstanding...
patriotism is the love for ones country... and i think it is stupid to be proud of something you didnt do, but some guy 300 years ago... whatever your country did in the past, it doesnt have too much to do with you personally...

But Fabi, countries are always growing, rome wasn't built in a day, America's greatest time has been in the last 50 years, and even recently with the internet and the war on terror, its not just what happened hundreds of years ago, its what I am a part of now. Patriotism is about being proud of your countries history, but also being part of it now and being excited about the future.
i know what you mean... and agree maybe about the present... but history is unimportant. you personally didnt contribute anything to it, and if you are proud of your history then you should be all pro-german or pro-british or something... cause probably that's part of your history, too...
it just gets on my nerves when people say 'WE did this, and WE did that.....' because it is great and stuff, and maybe if you agree with all that you can be happy about a system that allowed those things you appreciate about your history... but it's not anything to be really proud of... of course that's just theory...
in reality i was still happy to see 'rammstein' cds in the US although i really dont like them... ;) just as an example.... ;)

Stepping back for a moment, I personally see no problem with taxes on things that are imported from another country, since things that we export are taxed, if we can export at all.
The car industry is a good example of this, as it is hard for us to export cars to Japan and several EU nations, mostly due to restritive trading laws.
However, if someone cares to create a car and export it to the US, no sweat. Just make sure it passes our safety and smog laws, and you're in.
(Note: I actually don't agree with most taxes, but you hopefully see the point I'm trying to make here..)
