Im sure some of you are aware of the recent news. Basically Mexico opposition parties and the majority of the population are against President Calderon 'reform plans' for the Mexican Oil sector. Its believed that Calderon it's aiming to privatize the 70 year state owned Oil company, PEMEX. Something that's obviously unconstitutional...
Calderon has not openly said that PEMEX will be privatized. But he does make hints about it. Saying things along the lines of
The real question that we should be asking ourselves is how to take better advantage of our petroleum resources to bring prosperity to Mexico in the future.
Experts believe there is much more oil in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico but PEMEX lacks the technology to expand its exploration sufficiently.

I know, he keeps saying that PEMEX needs the tecnology that private firms have in order to exploit the oil that its underground in the sea.
But if that were too happen it would be useless for Mexico because yea, the oil would be exploited but it would be like before the Mexican revolution, the firms would get rich and the people will stay the same.
On the other side is sad that, that even though PEMEX belongs to the people of Mexico our corrupted politicians make sure no money ever gets to us.

do the private companies have a monopoly or patents on the technology needed to dig deeper and or refine the oil that's in the gulf of mexico? Why can't mexico get this technology? and I agree PEMEX is pretty fucked up.

Well the thing is, like we all know capitalist are pretty effective at getting rich and amasing wealth, so unlike PEMEX, they can afford to buy the necesary technology. PEMEX is not so far from bankrupt in great part because the politicians just steal money from it, enstead of actually improving it.
And yes if Lazaro Cardenas knew about this he would be so angry. The nationalization of PEMEX is one of the few steps that Mexico has taken toward socialism and now stupid Calderon wants to take that back.
By the way one of his gabinet members or something like that, is said to have conections with PEMEX or oil companies or something like that. The thing is that he an his family would probably benefit from the privatizaton of PEMEX.

It sounds like a trojan horse for privatisation.
But how does a public firm acquire private technology?

True, Lopez Obrador plans to take action if they do indeed try to privatize it.
