THE HAGUE - German publisher Henryk Broder accuses Dutch former prime minister Dries van Agt of anti-semitism, because of his criticism of the way Israel treats the Palestinian people. In the TV program Netwerk on Monday evening, Broder called Van Agt "a neat Christian anti-semite".

According to Broder, Van Agt is using the 83-year-old Jewish Dutchman Hajo Meijer to make his statements 'kosher'. Meijer, who survived Auschwitz, wrote a book in which he criticized Israel's occupation policy in the Palestinian territories.

Meijer is also an anti-semite, according to Broder.

'Heavy and painful'
Van Agt calls Broder's accusations "very heavy and extremely painful". He says that they are a known method to silence critics of Israel.

So, what do you think? Is Meijer, who survived Auschwitz, a "self-hating Jew"? A "Jewish anti-semite", because he participates in "Another Jewish Sound" which criticizes taboos about Israel in the Jewish community?

What about the former prime minister, once a moralizing Christian politician, turned opponent of Israel in his later life?

Criticism of Israeli treatment of Palestinians being labeled as anti-Semitism is usually something used by Christians and such rather than Jewish people themselves. (Since comparing something to Hitler obviously isn't viewed by Jews as a light punishment)

I think those who say stuff like "Israel controls US foreign policy, has US as a puppet, ZOG government" etc are anti-Semitic. (I think it's the other way around for the most part, with the exceptions being Israel trying to get weapons from China in which the US is like "Yeah, uh....please don't do that.....please?" etc)

Oh, I agree that anti-semitism and conspiracy theories within the left should be avoided. But that should never mean self-censorship with regards to Israel's abuses. There is a dangerous tendency where any criticism of Israel is considered "spreading hatred against the Jews". For example, the State Dept. recently "diagnosed" this: http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2008-03-13-anti-semitism_N.htm?csp=34

Also, I should say that Henryk Broder is a Jew himself.
