What do you think about Maximilien Robespierre's Deist "Cult of the Supreme Being"?

Was it a progression from the other organized religions that came before it?

Or was it a sign that a once progressive revolution was failing and was starting to turn away from its original ideals?

It helped to sow the seeds for the demise of the Jacobins and Robespierre, that's for sure. Personally I can't help but think that it was some ill-conceived plan for undermining Catholic culture in France, but it is comically tragic how poorly Robespierre understood the political consequences of attacking the people's cultural institutions. It is certainly a lesson we should learn from.

Nowhere near as cool as the Cult of Reason (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_of_Reason). For a start, the Cult of Reason had more fun than the deists.
