This is a great article that shows the remarkable similarities between the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989, and its consequences for the USSR, to the current US occupation of Afghanistan and the consequences that are now being felt by the west because of it.

They should have let Moscow run the place 30 years ago. Instead, Jimmy Carter and the CIA had to incite a bunch of Muslim wackos and then arm and fund the motherfucking shit out of them, thus crippling the socialist betterment of Afghan life...I mean, for all their warts, these were people dedicated to dismantling the feudal system, getting women into the classroom, and secularising Afghan society. The U.S.-backed opposition wanted to create another Iran or Saudi Arabia.
