The move comes amid a growing crisis over a Colombian raid into Ecuador to kill leftist Farc rebels.
Venezuela and Ecuador have already broken off diplomatic ties and moved troops to their borders with Colombia.
Mr Ortega said "we are breaking off relations because of the political terrorism" carried out by Colombian President Alvaro Uribe.
He made the announcement in his capital, Managua, with Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa at his side.
Mr Correa is on a tour of Latin American capitals to rally opposition to Colombia's cross-border raid on Saturday.
Senior Colombian Farc rebel leader Raul Reyes was killed along with at least 16 other people at a jungle camp just inside Ecuador's border.

Opps. Mods, please add the letter "N" in front of "icaragua" on the title.

Well done to Ortega, i had been hearing bad things about him so it is good to see that he still associates himself with progressive states defending themselves from Imperialism.

Colombia are being further isolated by their neighbours as Brazil and Chile also condemned Colombia's actions:D

Ortega has done some fairly questionable things recently, nice to see some part of him is still leftist, probably his right little toe.

It's nice to see he hasn't totally degenerated into a liberal...

I knew this was going t happen. The US decided it could launch attacks any where anytime, because it was a "victim" of terrorist attacks. Now other countries are emalting the US policy of being able to lauch attacks against politcal enemies any time anywhere, disregarding the politcal boundries of other countries, because they feel they have the right to.

Ortega is a Chávez-lite, so seeing this happen isn't surprising. Ortega, Morales, Chávez and (Fidél) Castro get along well and it's expected to see them sticking up for eachother.

Daniel Ortega is the only revolutionary leader in Central America!

No. There are no revolutionary leaders in Central America. Daniel Ortega was and is just a pretender.

Not even. I prefer the term reactionary. There's the stuff PC thugs like Hillary Clinton whine about but there is genuine misogyny in the world and on the political side Ortega is among the biggest offenders. I also heard he has orgies with priests and altar boys.

By the way, didn't Ortega once sent his own troops to El Salvador or something like that?

I also heard he has orgies with priests and altar boys. That's a fairly unusual claim. Source?

Also, I'm surprised how reactionary he is on abortion. While the banning of abortion is bad, it's absurd when it's taken to levels where the woman can't even have one to save her own life. This would be a definite case of putting religion over politics.

Please. Ortega's revolutionary FSLN days are long gone.

I guess the fact that he's breaking ties with Colombia is worth something though.

Ortega is nothing more than a false revolutionary. I'm glad to see he's breaking away from Colombia though, showing there is still some of the left within him. Uribe's opposition seems to be growing every day.

my friend i have to agree with you... not only that the more and more Alvoro Uribe talks and justifies his OWN terrorist actions, the more the Colombian President sounds like George W. Bush!.. when i hear him say things like.."it was necessary to in the fight AGAINST TERRORISM!" WOW! I can't help it, but to think how much he sounds like Bush. and its fucking sick. what sick asshole he is this guy.

If Ortega opposes political terrorism, as he claims he does, then Nicaragua should stop participating in the School of Americas (a participation that heads way back to the Somoza dictatorship, which the Sandinistas overthrew). In understanding what the School of Americas teaches, which is the repression of progressive and leftist movements, it makes Ortega seem very similar to Uribe.

I thought the "School of the Americas" was closed since it was exposed to the public.

It's still open? :(

Yes comrade, the institution changed it's name in 2001 to the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. Regardless of the name, their essential intentions are still completely intact.

Haha its funny how the junta school just changed their name and seemed to disappear. But then again, I shouldn't be laughing.

I'm hoping to attend the annual protest this year.
