View Full Version : The State in Capitalist Society
Imperial Power

I am currently reading this book and it seems Ralph Miliband is correct. Capitalism no longer exists in the form we think of. The mixed economy of government regulation has taken over all modern advanced capitalist society. Since WW2 government regulation, and subsidies have controlled the market. Therefore the hands off economy does not really exist. The scale and pervasivness of states intervention in contempory capitalism is now immeasurable greater than ever before, and will undoubtedly continue to grow. The situation is so complicated and I now feel all western society is post capitalist. Although it is to early to sign the obituary, capitalism definitely morphing into a new system of free enterprise. But one thing will always remain and that is social class. At least this post capitalism economy allows for upward movement on the social scale.

I agree
BIG TAXES = RESTRICTION on FREEDOM of ENTERPRISE
The rich can afford big taxes, the middle class can not afford big taxes.
Tax should be flat and based on a set percentage of what you purchase - not what you earn.
This country was founded by men trying to limit big government - not make it bigger.

wait.....you just noticed that?
Hardcore Capitalism ended the moment when Labour Unions managed to form and when things like social security were introduced.
Capitalism in it's purest form was back when you'd have children and women work 14 hours a day for a shit pay.
Everything after that had at least a few Socialist components.
I can see how someone named Imperial Power would want this state to return though...
i was listening to ralph nader on the radio the other day. he was talking about the influence of third parties throughout history. he said he once asked the socialist party leader (i forgot who he was) what he thought his party has accomplished seeing as to how there aren't any socialists in office. and he said their biggest accomplishment was seeing the democrats taking up some of the socialist platform.
OH-YEAH!

Yes, that would be why there are different tax bands allowing people to pay based on what they earn.

I hate to break it to you, but Gap products aren't sold much in North Korea. $200 Nikes aren't as common in China as they are in the United States. And, at last count, Old Navy didn't have its best sales in Cuba. Through globalization, which is supported by the right and not the left, American companies have gotten off even easier and use more sweatshop labor than ever. Are you anti-globalization? Which, if any, restrictions on globalization do you support? It's time for a reality check.

Globolisation is just the modern term for imperialism that attempts to mask its ambitions for cultural, political and economic hegemony around the world.

And you think the US cares about its people? Look at all the ghettos. You think Bush cares about all the babies born into poverty? Where are their charity drives? I don't see Bush doing a commercial for a boy whos mom did crack so now he can't walk. The US doesn't give a fuck about anyone either. It allows children to live in those conditions.

my fault were was my head. Bush, when your out there protecting my freedom and stealing it from some child, remember Those little kids bombed our WTC buildings. Kill all the 4 year olds. THey may look like children playing in the streets, but when they are playing they are training to come and take away my freedom to bomb them
(I was being sarcastic just incase some didn't notice that)

There's a similar situation in the UK. The NHS (public health service), trains and Post Office are collapsing and virtually unusable. Meanwhile, Blair's in the US telling us how utterly despicable Saddam fucking Hussein is. I'm sick of Blair being Bush's puppet, sort out the fucking UK first you idiot...this War on Terrorism is so self-righteous it's sick.

Do you think privitisation is good? well tell that to the thousands of unemployed britons who were postal workers.
And those sweat shops are Us owned so its not really China abusing those people its you. And can you imagine China saying "No" to US globel companies? well a new war or terror will start, "help those poor sweat shop employees, they have been terrorised by to much freedom".-G.W.Bush
