Hey folks
I'm going for a brief soiree in to Pop Art, it's more of an experiment with technique than anything else (I say that so often)...
Basically I'm a bit stumped on what to use with the background (or to leave it as it is).

This is what I'm kicking around at the moment, I'm not sure if there's enough contrast and the main piece isn't distinctive enough...

This is the plain version, which I'm vaguely inclined towards actually...
Just wondering if anyone has any feedback or suggestions they'd be so kind as to put forward.

Whilst they both seem ok, is there any reason for the first background, or for the colours used? The first one is quite colourful, although in the second one, his head stands out a lot more.

The main reason is just to try and make it quite abbrasive/80s
I was playing around a bit with it yesterday and I've decidely dropped the first background...
Still not sure whether to include anything more...

I think you should do an andy warhol style montage with 9 different designs including those set in a grid. Especially with that first one, it looks very trippy in a 60's sort of way.

i agree. very good idea. Maybe something a little different in one of the squares, though, just to get people thinking...

The upper one looks nicely psychedelic. But why a picture of the Unabomber..?

This is what I ended up submitting to DA

It's pretty much the plainer version with a paint drip...
Why the unabomber? Why not?
It's not idolising the unabomber or anything... It's more just a play on popular culture (although arguably it's not a pervasive part of pop. culture and is somewhat dated)... Probably the same motivation in which Andy Warhol painted Mao.
...also because the image was quite easy to manipulate.
Interesting idea on the montage front, it's a spot cliché but I might try and pull something with it. I don't really feel like it's finished at all.
