Study Shows Poverty Equals Early Death

A new study shows the poorer you are the more likely you are to die young.
The way in which more than 14,000 people died in the early 1990s was related to income, employment and education statistics taken from the 1991 census.
No matter what the cause, those with lower socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to die before the age of 65.
The study's author, Dr Tony Blakely from Otago University, says smoking, drinking and poor diet are all factors, as is access to healthcare.
Dr Blakely says lung disease rose dramatically as income dropped.
The unemployed were twice as likely to commit suicide.
Dr Blakely says it is time we looked more closely at other ways to reduce smoking besides increasing the tax on tobacco.
