Forty years after Mr. Castro overthrew Fulgen-cio Batista -- a mulatto military dictator backed by the United States -- Cuba remains racially divided between the white haves and the black and mixed-race have-nots.

Years of racial intermarrying has turned the Cuban population into a spectrum of shades, and at the street level, Cuba has far less racial tension than virtually anywhere in the United States. But official Cuba might as well have a sign on the doors of power saying “Whites only.”

Cuba’s blacks and mulattos make up more than 60 percent of the island’s population but hold less than 10 percent of the leadership positions in government.

Members of the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus - sometimes called “Fidel’s amen corner” - have been vocal in supporting the Cuban revolution and opposing the U.S. economic embargo on Cuba but remain almost silent on racial inequalities there.

In September a few years ago, Mr. Castro went to Harlem and spent nearly five hours before an ecstatic crowd of mostly black supporters, ripping the United States for a litany of wrongs, including racism. During the speech, Rep. Maxine Waters (big supporter of sending Elian Gonzalez back to Cuba), a California Democrat and Black Caucus member, sat at his feet in rapt attention.

Why does the American Black Caucus support Fidel Castro? - Fidel Castro does not seem to support black power.

Maxine Waters, Charles Rangel, Gregory Meeks and other Black American Politicians are funded heavily by Castro.

Castro and Communist ride the coat tales of hatred, fear, and racism to further their cause - yet if one studies these groups carefully - one will notice that they do more harm to the Africans they claim to represent.

Wake up Africans - you are being duped by hateful propaganda.

Look at who is in power in Communist Cuba (a country that is 40% Mulatto, 20% African, 1% Chinese, and 20% White) The representation is not fairly distributed.

Even the USA has a more fair distribution of power amongst African Americans than Cuba has amongst African Cubans.

Capitalist, do you have any statistics on how black people were treated during Batista's days? I'm not trying to be a ***** here, I really am interested . . . because saying that Batista was a mulatto doesn't mean anything. People of mixed ancestry aren't (always) perfect. My sister, for example, is a mulatto, but she smells funny.

im no castroist but ive been to cuba and blacks there arent treated bad.black in the usa are treated badly cause ive seened it.....once you see a black person walk to a rich white person stro you knoe theyll kick the black person out....why 1)the rich white dont think the black have money ,there brain washed by money and riches thinking thier skin is the best.......hey capitalist i hate that name but have you been to cuba.unless you have been there you cant say nothing.......yeah fidel does bad things but not as bad as some other people like bush,or practices imperialism like bush.

I agree with Stalinsoldiers and I know I did on another message board. . . .protesting isn't getting anywhere. . .where I live (NY) blacks arn't treated horribly but you can see the difference. . .I have nothing against them but they do single themselves out in some ways. . .but we should respect that. . .I've never been bothered by a black person so why bother them? I'm not sure if useing guns to fight back is such a good idea at this point and time. . .I prefer protesting and taking other means of stands. . .I said it somewhere else as well. . .Military technology is to far in advance to start a fight. I refuse to travel to Cuba and donate my tourist dollars to Fidel Castro's oppressive government/military. One does not need to travel to Cuba to understand the injustice that has taken place for 40+ years.

Back to the subject...

African Culture as always been accepted and many aspects adopted by the Cuban Culture. That was true before Castro ever came to power (Cuban music, and intermarriage between whites & blacks is proof).

The average Cuba is very tolerant of African Culture.

I never denied this obvious fact.

I agree - Most Cubans are not racist.

HOWEVER - The Cuban Government and Fidel Castro obviously discriminate against blacks because there are very few blacks appointed to high ranking government positions.

Sure - I agree that there are many black Cubans in the lower ranks of Castro's government and police - however there are almost none in the higher/more important positions.

Castro's High Ranking Government Offices is for White's Only.

There we go again with the stereotypes, Capitalist. Not all whites are racists and not all racists are white. If Fidel is a racist then could you explain why 90% of Cuban exhiles are white and over 60% of the people in Cuba are non-white (Their soccer team is 100% black, for example and most of the Cuban millitary is black). I read a documentary of a white Cuban who joined the Ku Klux Klan when he moved to the U.S. because of the precious "Freedom of expression" (which should be renamed "Freedom of OPPRESSION") that there wasn't in Cuba. Plus, I saw the march in the streets in Cuba a few months ago celebrating the anniversary of the revolution and I couldnt help but notice people of all races marching next to Fidel and waving Cuban flags. Would blacks and other non-whites give that much support to say Vorster in apartheid South Africa? And what do you have to say about the voting restrictions they used to have in the U.S. where only white landowning males could vote? "White male capitalists only" if Im not mistaken?!?!?!

Capitalist - so because there aren't any blacks in high-ranking positions in the Cuban government, Castro must be racist?? How many blacks are there on average, in an European government?? I can't think of a single non-white on the UK's Government Cabinet. Does that make Tony Blair (much as I hate him) racist?? And even you admit that there "very few" blacks in the higher ranks of the Cuban government. Well that's more than many "Western", "civilised" capitalist countries...

Fidel Castro does not appoint government officials, the people do!!! Secondly this is another example of how the Cuban exiles put some pictures on the net of the "government" and goes see no blacks Castro+racism=Hitler. Truth be known there is a couple of Black's in high posistions in the government that are not shown nor talked about by the exile controled site shown here.

The Miami Cubans are liars they take one little thing and twist into something the American people "believe" its there god given right to fight and correct. This thread is a prime example of that. Truth be known in terms of Democracy and rights of the "people" as a whole of society, Cuba is at the forefront. It truelly is a government for the people, by the people. The only way to discredit Fidel Castro and his government is by spreading vicious slanderous lies and banning people from traveling there to see for themselves the real Cuba.
