Obviously this is pretty big news, but not surprising.

What changes do you think will come, if any at all? What economic or political changes would you like to see?

Yea I'm not too surprised either. It would've been cool to see another person be president but I guess they decided to go with someone they know which makes sense. I can't really think of anything right now but I would love to see a better relationship with the U.S. but of course that's on with the next president here and not with Cuba.

I'm really not sure that anything will change, for now. Ideologically, Raul is much like Fidel.

Raul will die within 10 years; surprised I give him that long. In any case, after him, another Socialist leader will take power and it will continue. There's nothing entirely undesirable in Cuba that would cause any major changes at all, the citizens love it there. Even the trade embargo, the interventionists' final effort, has done nothing to deter Cuba. There's really no reason for change.

BTW, who here has been to Cuba?

How's it like?

Is it nearly as bad as the TV will have you think it is?

At cpusa.org they have a video of people there talking about Fidel resigning and one person there in the video has been to Cuba and talks about their experience there and how it's nothing like what the media says here in the States.

We go there every year, to visit friends. We leave again March 16 for 2 weeks. It is nothing like what you see portrayed by USA media/"exiles".

We also bring in medicines which are difficult to get due to the blockade.

I think the result of the elections was not surprising. And it's pretty obvious where the country is going to go.

So does this mean there will be no major changes, if any at all?

If that's true, then it's great news.

Methinks they should have put Castro's niece in charge, for the very reason that Raul is only 5 years younger than Fidel, and also because she has overseen many reforms, such as the gay liberation. She seems to have proved herself a loyal Castroist.

Just another crime committed under the name of capital. U.S. conservatives really try and give Cuba's socialized medicine a bad name. I'd really like to see a link of what life is actually like in Cuba. I already know it's not at all like the propoganda channels say it is, but I'd still like to see it for myself. Any links, buddies?

The media is always blowing these things out of proportion. There's nothing wrong with Cuba that the U.S. didn't cause. And even though Raul tends to be more aggressive than Fidel, I don't think any drastic changes will be made. And I don't know how much better I would want them to get along with the U.S., but I definitely think Cuba and the US should at least try to lift the trade embargo for the better of the Cuban citizens.

That's really disgusting. Especially in a country where church-and-state aren't even completely seperated, I'd imagine being Christian-like and giving fellow human-kind some medicine to help out in Cuba would be a top priority.

Im not sure I'm seeing what's so disguisting about what I said. I think the trade embargo should be lifted, I just don't think Cuba should be pal-ing around with imperialist america. And I sure as hell didn't say anything about christianity or the seperation of church and state.

The Cuban medical system gives what it has. The only thing wrong with it is that it doesn't have many resources, therefore no trade. So I'd say that the Cuban medical system is pretty fucken phenomenal.

Yes, I was. And the remark referring to "church-and-state" was nothing more than criticizing America for being a "Christian nation" when really they don't even practice Jesus's teachings.
