Definitely, Hip-Hop. No other music is so globally embraced that has the ability to give inspiration to millions of poor and super-exploited. This is, of course, recognizing that the music started as a political movement, presently having a wide array of positive artists and ignoring the "souljah boy" types.

It's weird, when I was younger, all I listened to was Alternative Rock. Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, etc. I bought Nas's Illmatic on impulse one day, and that was the end of that.

Now I'm stuck with a collection of Alternative CDs I can't do anything with. :(

It's too late! No one buys CDs anymore. Everyone uses Limewire or iTunes

I suppose I could give them away, but none of my friends would want them. I'll eventually end up throwing them out...but that seems like such a waste.

Gotta be the blues
Agreed. If there were no blues or folk, music today would not be the same music. The same goes for classical music, obviously.

It's just like history, people get influenced by people.

For example, Rage Against The Machine was influenced by a diverse group of musicians including Public Enemy, Minor Threat, MC5, and even Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.

Sabbath and Zeppelin were influenced by jazz and blues. Sabbath was actually originally called Earth and were almost completely jazz.

Actually, Zeppelin went so far as to recreate many classic blues songs. They covered many songs by musicians such as Willie Dixon, Blind Willie Johnson (I believe), and Robert Johnson (a personal favorite.)

Punk wins... It's definitely the most political of the genres.

Dystisis
10th March 2008, 15:42
I don't listen to music because of political motives. There might very well be political motives behind the music I listen to but that doesn't really matter. You have music for different purposes:
1. Music to really listen to and be inspired from, kind of like you'd enjoy an interesting movie or piece of art. For music to fit in this one it would have to be focused on song structure, creating emotions in the listeners.
2. Music to set a certain mood. Can be for example "party music". Is actually very close to the third option:
3. Music just for the sake of sound. Something you "listen" to while doing other things. I would most pop music falls under this category. I also would say most punk should be in here, as punk has much of the same song structure as normal pop-rock (although often with more rabid vocals and more bpm). Some classical "hard-rock" and heavy metal fits in here as well... sure, it can sound cool, but you don't really sit down and study the music. Note that there are plenty of exceptions.

Punk wins... It's definitely the most political of the genres.
I guess the lyrics are often political... And if the lyrics are what defines the punk genre you might be right.

I agree; but political motives inspire me.

Bad Religion are political in a 'Barack Obama-style' intellectual way.
The Dead Kennedys are very satirical about serious issues.
The Clash were revolutionary in politics; a 'build-up and fix our flaws' philosophy; a huge contrast to the Sex Pistols' destruction and nihilism.

I find this the most inspiring thing on earth.

All and only topics about music belong here. Polls have been allowed, but please use good judgement before making one, as you should do for every thread. Polls about our favorite musical genres are not allowed because it's a silly question and always causes controversy. If you make one, everybody will flame you for it and I will either close or trash your thread.

I voted rock, since there was no reggae option (since reggae is a [bad ass] evolution of rock). But I definitely love reggae, reggae dub, rock (classic 50's 60's 70's and a bit from the 80's), hip hop/ rap. And some of the more rebellious hard rock like RATM, so on. I'm really into slightly stoopid right now cos they send a good message delivered with a sweet reggae sound.

Does anyone else think reggae sounds really fuckin good when you're high?

I, personally, can't stand metal. I would've hoped it had never existed, then i found out that the first song to be classed as metal was, in fact, a beatles song (helter skelter, white album disc2/side 3 track 6), so i leave it be now. I voted for punk, as the spirit behind it is the greatest of all the genres listed. It isn't just a genre, it's a mindframe.
