What was generally broadcasted? (animations, talkshows etc.,) And was there somewhat of a workers' control over what was being viewed and produced?

I would think it would follow in the Soviet policy of Socialist realism, i.e. Maxim Gorky, which was the criteria for all the creative Arts.

Soviet TV was like Public TV (BBC, PBS, TVO,ect), only with overtones of the party line. Meaning you had animations, kids shows, dramas, made for TV movies, News, documentaries, ect.

Not as much artistic freedom as Russian films made during the 20's had.

Interesting point, I believe that the only way to critique the Soviet Union through the media was through cartoons, for some odd reason.

Psy pretty much answered it. I was born in Ukraine but didn't witness the soviet tv as I mostly grew up in the 90s..but from what I know I can tell you we had a very well known News program called "Vremya" which is translated to "Time" it was a daily news broadcast. It had a very distinct opening, there was a traditional clock and it would start counting down a minute before it began.. creating a sense of excitement.

if you're wondering what the new bit is about, it's the 60th anniversary of the Revolution

I have seen the "Firing Range" one before and cant understand why they say "If we had weapons like that we would have kept our colonies" and then they immediately go on to talk about Africa?
So did the USSR ever regard the African countries, that they sent their personal to during the various African wars of liberation, as their colonies?
Or does the word "colony" have a different meaning in Russian which does not carry the same connotations as it would in say English?

That is just a couple, there is so many on the net. But I was looking for There Lived Kozyavin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7bcqQim6pM) but didn't even know the title when I made my last post. It is about a man that follows the vague order from his boss too literally and without pause.
