We are getting ready to study this in history and in our book it goes into the stock market, etc. But it basically just blames it on the lack of trust the Americans had in the economy at the time. I want to know what the real reasons were for the economic collapse?

Also, I asked my teacher what he attributed to the cause of the housing market decline...he said that it was also a lack of trust in the economy. If the people do not trust the economy they are not going to take out loans and things like that. Is this a valid assessment?

Well, there's also alot to be said about the drastic inequality regarding the distribution of wealth in the 1920's, as well as stock market speculation that went on during the latter part of the twenties; not to mention the emergence of credit. Actually it was also in great part, the banks fault, since they used their clients money to invest in the stock market. So when the stock market crashed all the people's money dissapeared.
